Code.overheid.nl is a pilot in which we are going to test @forgejo; an open source and sovereign alternative to GitHub/GitLab.

the thing about “never attribute to malice what can be easily explained by incompetence” is that it’s rat-fuckable

when there is functionally no difference between the two, engaging with someone as if they’re incompetent means accepting their frame, that what they’re ultimately trying to accomplish isn’t *bad*, they’re just going about it in a way with bad side-effects, and people use in bad-faith our good-faith willingness to treat them as incompetent to push their agendas

engaging with someone as if they’re malicious, on the other hand, means rejecting the harmful frame, recasting the argument in terms of “why are you trying to do this bad thing?”, and not quibbling about the details of why the thing is bad

these age-verification laws whose implementations are a form of category error is a good example; if you engage with a proponent of them with “well here’s why your implementation is bad” you’re tacitly approving the larger idea that surveliance is good, and you just disagree with the techniques; bad-faith actors use this

If instead you come back with “why are you trying to surveil everyone’s computer use? Why are you laying the groundwork to prevent people from using their own computers?”, you re-cast the frame. Sure, there are probably incompetent people who don’t realize the results of what they’re going to do, but casting the larger idea into question AND KEEPING IT IN QUESTION is the only effective path I’ve found to debating people on things like this

so, instead:

don’t ascribe to incompetence something that is functionally malicious

TL;DR Flock is rolling out both a Shotspotter-like feature (inherently flawed) and a function purporting to detect human voices "in distress" using AI.

This is not going to work. And it's going to get people killed by police aggressively responding to non-emergency situations mistaken for emergencies.

If your municipality has a Flock contract, tell them to cancel it.

I’m helping my elderly mother (93) adapt to a new computer. It’s an iMac. She’s had Mac’s for the last 25 years.

Mostly this is fine. But man, Apple has completely lost their way with accessibility. Some things, obviously are world-leading. I don’t want to ignore that.

But the fucking mouse gestures. In Apple Mail you cannot turn off left-right swipe gestures. My mother, with her arthritic hands, cannot reliably do just vertical. It tends to be diagonal. Swiping on a mouse is great. But we need LESS gesture.

In Apple mail the little set of buttons that allows you to see the existence of attachments and download them only appears if you move the mouse. If you leave the mouse alone a few seconds, it disappears. So trying to tell her where to look for something? It disappears before I can get her to focus on it.

Everything that's wrong with the United States of America is right here. A country that's more concerned with protecting fossil fuel firms and the gun lobby from the consequences of their actions - namely the former's macro-level actions of destroying the planet and the latter's micro-level actions of destroying lives of individuals and those around them.

(Not that we in the UK are much better, but at least we've yet to cave into the gun lobby.)
