@neurovagrant his points are valid concerns, but also the whole paper comes off as Old Man Yells at Cloud to me. We can’t force society to care about security. The world rolled along before computers and the internet, and if we have to we can again.
Also if you think about it, 50 years is a discipline still in its infancy. There are many areas of reasonable debate on what the right path is, or even if the path for one should be the path for many or all. Till society has some consensus there we will always be the old men yelling at clouds.
@Infosecben an arc to consensus around a lot of this is probably a myth, i think.
there's a lot of things to yell at the cloud about and be correct. but it's a fair point around something that you want to have received well (which probably isn't Cohen's concern).
how would you frame the valid points to avoid the old man/cloud perception?
@neurovagrant When speaking with anyone about cybersecurity I first try to relate, put myself in their shoes, understand their needs and priorities, then from there, I ask some Socratic questions that open our discussion on where they stand and where they want to go. Build up on that till I have some common ground and hopefully gently lead them to as close to a wise choice as I can. I see my role mostly as a trusted advisor, they are and always are in the driver’s seat. I simply do my best to get them up to speed enough on the outcomes and risks for them to make an informed decision.
