Moving from hacking/cyberpunk subculture to solarpunk subculture - what does fashion look like?

Fashion both within popculture art (think the movies Hackers and things like Studio Ghibli or Disney's Strange World for the solarpunk side) and within an Intentional Wear approach within the day to day...

For me (no subculture is a monolith), solarpunk aesthetics are and are not a set of ideals.

Solarpunk Fashion is:
- an expression of artistic and creative joy and beauty
- comfortable
- pragmatic and utilitarian to the goal in hand
- meant to showcase individuality as well as connection to local communities
- built for longevity with repair and mending in mind

Solarpunk Fashion is not:
- minimalist, beige, gray, and meant to blend in
- fashion for fashion's sake (pain or discomfort to wear those nice shoes is not great)
- wearing something outside of its context or application (eg wearing pressed workman's clothes or construction gear to go out, etc)
- meant to show status
- fast fashion or meant to be discarded for the next hyped of thing

For me, I have the day-to-day fashion down.

An example:
- Top is summer-hoodie with long wicking sleeves meant to be comfortable but also protect from sun and heat
- Bottoms are comfortable fitting light weight pants that are meant to be airy and cool and easy to walk in (denim jeans are too rough and uncomfortable and i only wear them to do manual work in for example, not to walk around in). Flipped around I don't like wearing my comfort loafing attire outside.
- Shoes are barefoot toe shoes that are amazing to walk in and allow me to feel the ground and various textures.

I don't have my going-out and looking nice fashion down. But my initial attempts are colorful and comfortable - I don't have stylishness down yet but it's a goal.

I can do basic sewing mending but I love the ideal of stylish mending (mending that doesn't hide that it's mending while also trying to be very aesthetically pleasing).

I don't talk fashion here often, but it's one of those interests of mine that is both latent and very rarely explored.

(You know those interests of your's that you have both neither the time nor the money to pour into them? So you enjoy the topic when it's brought up but don't have deep involvement. Anyhoo!)

The quoted post is about popculture depictions of the aesthetics of hacking in the 90's as seen through a very 90's hacking movie.

"Hackers" is not an accurate depiction of hacking.

It is an "artistic depiction" of hacking.

I spent my highschool years hacking along the border of Texas and Mexico. My clothes were very typical of a highschooler then. T-shirt with edgy saying, under an unbuttoned short sleeve button-up "overshirt" on top of relaxed-fit to loose-fit jeans and tennis shoes.

I thought of the clothes in the movie "Hackers" as avant-garde and the type of thing you would only see in NYC proper (I had only experienced New York through movies) or the type of thing you would (separately in my mind) see in movies.

It was very punk and very hacker to me.

This was also the time that The Matrix came out. Another - albeit from the complete opposite end - depiction of Hacker culture and aesthetics.

Neither looked good in real life 😂 but they looked amazing in our minds.

Planning on developing some downloadable @sci_burst “science & pop culture” resources and activities for high school #teachers to accompany some of their #science lessons. Involving things like #pokemon and #biology and #entomology, #solarpunk thinking and #sustainability in #australia etc.

Anything in particular people would be keen for and find useful?

(non-teachers are also welcome to use, we will just be designing them with teachers as the primary audience ❤️)

It's not a product I'm willing to sell, so I'm not terribly concerned about the copyright and claiming it's _mine_.

I wanted it to be a tool to express some values [not myself, artistically], to finally be able to have a game which _makes people feel_ the hard-won hope.

My current goal is to keep working on the initial AI proposal - I know where to take it from here - playtest it and publish it for free. Not hiding that the LLM was used to make the crucial step.

Now that I know _the pattern_ that I needed to convey what I've been looking for in game design... should I keep away from it, because it was suggested by a machine?

Should I put all the blame on the sin of using an LLM to research something that I expected to give me more hints, directions I could take somewhere further?

Does it mean that - ethically - using an LLM >around< your work makes the work tainted in some way, no matter how much initial work you put in it?

I don't have good answers.

For the past 3+ years I've been researching a #solarpunk game I could use in workshops to teach people that stubborn hope I keep failing to convey.

I decided to feed my research to an LLM and... it found the words.

Prowadziłam warsztaty solarpunkowe dla dzieci w Grzybowie.
Polegały na projektowaniu przestrzeni: miasta, farmy i centrum społeczności. Narysowałam kontury i pozwoliłam dzieciakom działać, czasem podrzucając pomysły, komentując, wchodząc w rozmowę.
Pojawiły się tematy dostępnych placów zabaw, przestrzeni dla seniorów, w gospodarstwie narysowaliśmy kompostownik i zbiornik na deszczówkę.
Zaskoczyła mnie pomysłowość i aktywność dzieciaków.
A na koniec zachęciłam ich do działania w prawdziwym życiu.

Some Solarpunk books, like Ruthanna Emrys' "A Half-Built Garden" feature similar technologies as plot devices - it's what the protagonist checks up on in the first chapter, which kicks off the events of the rest of the book.

An interesting example of potentially #solarpunk technology is https://www.instructables.com/TerraSono-a-Sustainable-Acoustic-Intelligence-Syst/ : a low-energy, solar powered audio sensor for forests and oceans which automatically logs and catalogs abnormal sounds. Runs on #LoRa and #tinyML .

The https://storyseedlibrary.org/seeds/the-beekeepers/ Story Seed is about a very similar projects, using MLs for monitoring the forests.
