I got some rainbow suncatcher/rainbow maker clings for my work windows and it's brought me an outsized amount of joy

On the same day, I shared in a blog post that I don't like the framing of "Ai as a literacy" (https://librarian.aedileworks.com/2026/10/05/fiction-non-fiction-and-friction/), the Canadian Association of Research Libraries releases a statement on "on Libraries and Student AI Literacy" lol

Looking ahead to November, our ProfDev session "A toolkit for building static sites" will be on November 18 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm ET. We will show you how to use three tools: SiteJet, cPanel, and Jekyll to get you started with building static sites. https://events.reclaimhosting.com/event/community-profdev-session-5/

A win for https://baserow.io over Airtable: I emailed their support and got an email back by an actual human with real, useful information rather than an obviously AI runaround non answer.

AI is distorting archaeology and flattening Indigenous Knowledge

Stories about a lost civilisation or ancient aliens will usually beat an evidence-based interpretation for sheer entertainment.

The consequences are not trivial.

Fringe narratives erode public trust in science and expertise, as the relentless flat-earth movement shows.

And pseudoarchaeology has a long record of diminishing Indigenous histories. Some of the most remarkable monuments ever built have been credited to almost anyone but the Indigenous peoples who made them.

The moai of Rapa Nui, the great stone figures carved and hauled into place by Polynesian islanders, have been attributed to ancient aliens and lost civilisations in bestselling books and now in AI-generated 'histories'.

Nan Madol, a city of basalt raised on artificial islets in Micronesia, gets credited to a vanished ‘super race’ rather than the Saudeleur people who engineered it.

In the Kimberley in Western Australia, some say the exquisite Gwion Gwion paintings are the work of a mysterious foreign people, not the Aboriginal ancestors whose descendants still care for them. New Caledonia's petroglyphs attract the same treatment.

Each of these false histories severs living communities from their ancestral heritage and props up racist assumptions about Indigenous people’s capabilities.

After months of roof work at work I am finally back in my office without smells or loud noises and it's so nice.

But of course they are doing construction down the hall 😆

With our August issue of #ReviewsInDH, we celebrate more than 1 MILLION page views. We're so grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this milestone. And don't miss an Asian and Asian Diaspora topic issue, "Resisting Cultural Erasure," edited by Doa Sarmad Khan. https://reviewsindh.pubpub.org/v7-n8 #DigitalHumanities #AcademicMastodon

The US has declared Autistici/Inventati, an Italian anarchist hacker (in the classic sense of the term) collective, a terrorist organization. https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0616/

But what you really ought to read is this article about A/I's history, and what this means https://web.archive.org/web/20260828071449/https://cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10083/2

I'm concerned that the US government is starting to identify decentralized media infrastructure as a threat to its survival. Repost information about this broadly, and if you have media contacts, inform them of counter-narratives; there could come a time where the fediverse, or any decentralized network infrastructure, is a target as well if we don't sound the alarms now.

EDIT: I linked to the wrong page! The second link is now fixed :)

EDIT 2: A/I's domains have been revoked! So added an archive.org link

Looking for comprehensive online resources for learning docker/containerization for development work (I know, I know, I’m behind the times). Please link if you know of anything good

(It’s ok if it costs money, but hopefully not, like thousands of dollars)

NEW on “Paper Trail”: Hundreds of immigration agents stormed a Chicago apartment complex overnight last year, some rappelling down from a helicopter.

Trump officials claimed they successfully arrested “terrorists.”

We uncovered a very different story. Listen to the full episode:

This might be the most beautiful thing I've read in my life. What a privilege to be alive in 2026.

I updated my total eclipse webcam viewer for today's eclipse!

Once totality begins you'll see a live-updating umbra, so you can race to the next webcam and see the eclipse happen over and over again.

Good news, everyone! We made it easy and free to convert your entire #Airtable workspace to durable Markdown files that you own and can use offline.

#Obsidian Bases supports all your views, filters, and formulas. Your data is yours, take ownership of it.

When #AI tools hallucinate citations, their made-up author names are not random. "We show that #LLMs do not merely default to high-probability individual names when generating fictional experts: they produce correlated character ensembles, pairs and trios [of co-authors] whose co-occurrence rates far exceed chance and are consistent across independent generations."
https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.02184

They fool people and tools:

"We identify 1,655 ghost-authored records claiming nonexistent journals with fabricated publication dates…Server-side #DataCite timestamps prove deliberate backdating…These carry real #DOIs…making them harvestable by any scholarly aggregator that ingests DOI metadata."

If useful, here's my attempt to process my feelings about how I feel sadly kinda — or rather very — sick from all this AI fascist nonsense as an academic. 😶‍🌫️

I'd be pleased if even one person finds something useful because there's something to be said for processing this all together, so, um, enjoy?

My secret, Cap, is that I'm *always* angry about old books. For instance, here's a tiny slice of the millions of books 1931-1986 that have no commercial value, that are digitized, but that we're unable to use in large-scale research because they are illegal to share or display.

Good morning! I'm delighted to announce the release of the Oral History of LIAS project. https://liashistory.com/

In 1974, Penn State bought its first computer. In 1979, it released its first library circulation module. By the mid 80s, you could search its catalog from a terminal or the rare home PC. These interviews are with 14 people who worked at the Libraries in that era.

It's both a library history and a computer/automation era history.

I know it’s not a competition, and the Bluesky folks had a small head start, but it seems like the Mastodon version of the Emily Dickinson Daily — @e_dickinson_daily — should have more followers. Currently, it’s Bluesky 105, Mastodon 36.

@DziadekMick @hosford42 @actuallyautistic

There's a difference between people who say "we're all a little bit autistic" and people who say "I'm a little bit autistic"

The first group are usually trying to invalidate autistic people.

The second group are usually female autistic people who have been taught not to claim any space for themselves, are hyper vigilant people pleasers because of childhood trauma because of unrecognised autism, and are terrified of being accused of "appropriating autism" and being fake-shamed.
