Ilhan Omar spent four years in a refugee camp and ended up becoming a Congresswoman. She represents the best of America, while Donald Trump represents the worst.

I am an indigenous person.
My mother called us Indians.
So did my classmates.
In the pecking order that existed at my elementary school that fact put me squarely at the bottom until the first black people came to our school. At that point I shared the bottom of the order.
Being Indian was lower than being a poor white person.
Meet my grandmother.
She was sent to Carlisle Indian Boarding School with her siblings. They were all tough as nails.
She didn't stray far from the reservation again after she made it home.
She did live with us one summer.
All of my cousins came with.
She taught me that life was too short to waste it hating the people that hated us.
Instead she taught me to write poetry.
The Wailaki people were almost exterminated.
But not entirely because here I am.
She would have been amused that we have Indigenous Peoples Day now I think.

In a world where the rich are unchecked, nothing we value will be respected.

Not stability.

Not fulfilled promises.

Not fairness.

Not meaningful work.

Not health.

Not children.

Nothing.

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Geneva Conference of 1977 was a watershed moment for Indigenous peoples of the Americas. It was the very first UN conference with Indigenous delegates, the first direct entry of Native peoples into international affairs, the first time that Native peoples were able to speak for themselves at the UN.

It was also the first declaration of Indigenous Peoples Day. A counter-celebration to Christopher Columbus Day, which celebrates colonization and a fake “discovery” of lands of the Americas.

Your feeds, today, will show you mainstream content. But I got the good stuff. Three elements of indigenous culture that you probably won’t see. (The third focuses on Indigenous women in Bolivia. Relevant because it honors the shared origin of the holiday.)

But we can’t celebrate this day without retrospection. So I have that for you as well.

I think an ideal triple-threat 70s movie night would be:

Network (1976)
Three Days of the Condor (1975)
All the President's Men (1976)

For the 80s:
War Games (1983)
The Terminator (1984)
Videodrome (1983)

For the 90s:
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
Crash (1996)
The Fifth Element (1997)

Remove Drumph from power.

Don't just remove the power. But also, remove the power.

Cancel ICE. Get rid of the Patriot Act. Defund the police.

Let's start from the rotten fish head and work our way down into every crevice of corruption and abuse, and exorcise it all.

I've picked a pair of movies for tonight.

First, A Bigger Splash (2015), directed by Luca Guadagnino, starring Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, and Dakota Johnson, is a drama about jealousy and murder.

Second, The Lover (1992), directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, starring Jane March and Tony Leung Ka-fai. It's a romantic drama set in 1920s Indochina.

OK third movie picked.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (2008), directed by Mamoru Oshii. It's anime, and the voices I'm hearing are dubbed into English. I may have seen this before, years back. I don't remember.

Do your thing. Whatever it is, do it and keep doing it.

Damn the torpedoes. Unless torpedoes are your thing.

I've picked out two movies for tonight. We'll see if I get in a third.

First up, Hard Eight (1996), directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Melora Walters, and Samuel L. Jackson. This is a crime drama.

Second, something lighter, My Name is Bruce (2007), directed by and starring Bruce Campbell, with Grace Thorsen, Taylor Sharpe, Ted Raimi, James Peck, Ellen Sandweiss, and Ben McCain. Of course it's got comedy, and it's a horror show.

We need a new set of murder mysteries. Murder in a billionaire's warehouse. Murder in a data center. Murder in a rocket factory. Murder in a drone hangar. Murder in a lobbyists office. Murder during a Hollywood merger.

One garage sale haul. Found these two collections one of Errol Flynn and one of Gary Cooper while biking home from coffee. #film #movies #dvds #haul #physicalmedia

Any one thing you complain about is easily compartmentalized.

We should be rioting in the streets over the combination of outrages, but we've managed to erect an infinite series of compartments to contain each of them.

Spent the afternoon visiting and running errands for Dad. Now home, having eaten some street tacos I made, I'm turning to film.

First up, Stephanie (2017), directed by Akiva Goldsman, starring Frank Grillo, Anna Torv, Shree Crooks and Jonah Beres. It's a thriller.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_(film)

Second, Andy Warhol's Bad (1977), directed by Jed Johnson, starring Carroll Baker, Perry King and Susan Tyrrell. It's a black comedy.

And for my third film of the evening, Murder by Death (1976), directed by Robert Moore, starring Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Nancy Walker, and Estelle Winwood. Hey, it's a Neil Simon script. And it's kind of like Clue.
