I guess now it's a bit late to warn people not to update the firmware on their #framework laptops, but here is what somebody did to fix them, when the company didn't help. at all.

spoiler: it ends well, but not thanks to framework

also, the ending of the article is *epic*.

@manyfold I've just uploaded 3dprint.social/models/8s370gp9… and realized: is there a standard compliant sticker for your project?

or is there an SVG of the logo so that I can make it myself (and have it printed for our Linux Day in October)?

Dear #3dPrinting-verse,

is there something I should know about prusa / printables.com?

I was vaguely thinking about making an account and publishing a few stl files for convenience (the original files are on my git repo, and they will remain there, but they are published as openscad source code), is it something I should avoid?

I don't think that there is a fediverse platform for 3d-printing files, right? mediaGoblin never got activityPub compatibility, iirc?

I will post on the blog about it later in the month (hopefully), but if anybody has a pressing need to make a cockade with multiple colours, say with a deadline in June, I've just published my instructions

sewing-patterns.trueelena.org/…

(they do look finished in the pictures, dont' they? yeah, they aren't. I'm still sewing the backs, but nobody needs to know about it :D )

/me, trying to draw a pcb and having to mix mm and mils.

if I ever build a time machine I'm not going back to kill Hitler. what I'm doing is going back to 1793 to save the ship with Joseph Dombey and the sample of the meter!

Dear people who make #corsets

I'm making myself a pair of lacing strips to use when fitting in-progress corsets: the corsets themselves will usually have eyelets every 2 cm, should I also put eyelets at the same distance on the lacing strips for accuracy, or do you usually make them with less eyelets?

boosts welcome, of course

I quite like my new fancy #fountainPen, I've loaded it with my go-to ink, and I've been using it semi-regularly.

But then last week I had to fill a couple of forms, in public, and when I got my pen from the beg I started to feel self-conscious and start to worry that maybe normal people aren't going to realize that it's a 16 € pen and not an expensive one, while the transparent plastic of the Preppy should show its price point quite more.

And I very much don't mind being seen as *that* person (the pen snob that won't lower themselves to write with a tool that isn't perfectly selected for their tastes), but I really don't want to be seen as *that other* persn (the pen snob that won't lover themselves to write with a tool that didn't cost at least a few hundred EUR).

TIL that #solarPanels also have bad consequences :D

today just after lunch for the second time since they had been installed our batteries were basically full, the sun was still shining, and we still can't send energy to the grid¹, so we run a dishwasher load, a washing machine (cold water, so it didn't help a lot, but that's what I had to wash at the moment) and we still weren't using what the panels were producing, so I had to face The Pile of Stuff That Needs Ironing.

I had been successfully² postponing that for *weeks*!

¹ from installation to being enabled for that it usually takes a couple of months, between bureaucracy and waiting for a tecnicians
² not that it is in any way near the bottom

The internet¹ is telling me that there is a hat pattern inspired by hats used to protest the nazi in Norway, with proceeds from the sale going to orgs that help people affected by ICE:

(I follow pallia's blog, I don't know anything about the author(s) of the pattern)

I've just realized that maybe somebody is interested here too

A few years ago I made some light resistance tests for (mostly) #fountainPen inks, by writing samples and taping them to a south-south-east facing window

forum.fountainpen.it/download/…
forum.fountainpen.it/download/…

now I have a south facing covered balcony, and I'm getting ready to start a new test between the equinox and the solstice; at the beginning of February I'm going to buy stuff from a shop that also sells ink samplers, and my budget for buying those is almost gone, but if somebody has requests I can add a couple more to the cart

Some have already been requested at forum.fountainpen.it/viewtopic… (in Italian, but the ink names are ink names :) )

I have been wondering one thing:

when residential #solarPanel installations produce energy that is used in the same house and not sold to the grid, is it counted in the stats about the renewable energy production of a country / grid-area-whatever? Or does it get missed because the grid never sees it? Or does it depend on the local regulations?

does anybody know?

TFW you are sewing a skirt, with various meters¹ of fabric on your legs, and need to check your notes², and you know that you've updated them somewhat on the laptop, but you're on the PC, so you git pull and. timeout.

the VPS³ where you have the git repository is down. and you could sync directly with the laptop, but you're here under various meters of fabric and the laptop is over there, turned off, on the other side of the room!

or you can complain on the internet until the VPS is back :D

(and find out that you didn't push your commit from the laptop)

¹ we don't do those “90 cm cut of fabric, good for a skirt here. it's ankle-length at the very least, and finished circumference at the hem above 3 m or GTFO
² what will become instructions on my website
³ contabo, if anybody is wondering

TFW you're walking around the house carefully holding a syringe¹ and they ring at the door.

thankfully it was for a somewhat spammy catalogue of frozen food delivered at home, and I didn't have to actually *open* the door while holding said syringe.

¹ empty, but still dirty with waterproof, document #fountainPen ink

Meanwhile, it's been a while since my last thread on crafting.

I've picked back up #knitting a shawl from *very fine* yarn that I started in 2022, when it looked like this:

and now looks exactly the same, but *a lot more*.

Now I have written down a plan and I think I can finish it by the end of September: it's longer than the usual time before I get bored with it and move to something else, but now that I can actually see the end I really want to do it!

(right now I have picked up a 8 days buffer, so there is hope)

Also, I've kept going on with the 16th century hemd inspired shirt I started (check notes 3 months ago: it's structurally done, I need to finish the bottom hem and the smocking at the sleeves, and then sort out buttons, so I hope that one too will be finished by the end of September, and then I can start some other project I have in the queue!

no feathering, almost no see-through (and the paper isn't too thick), nice to write on

Periodic reminder that #sewing a 18th century style shirt completely by hand:

* doesn't require any expensive equipment;
* doesn't require any particular space;
* can be done with cheap materials;
* is easy enough that a (18th century) child can do it;
* probably takes less time than you think.
