Here are some of the many types of server on the Fediverse:

You can follow and interact with their accounts from Mastodon, but to access a server type's own special features you will need to get an account on that server type.

For example, you can follow BookWyrm accounts from Mastodon, but you need a BookWyrm account to access BookWyrm-specific features such as creating reading lists, using the book database, organising your collection etc.

Have you ever accidentally boosted or deleted a post in Mastodon? You can avoid this by changing your settings to require a confirmation before any boosts or deletions actually happen:

#FediTips #Mastodon

You can set Mastodon to use dark mode, light mode or automatically match your device's own dark/light mode setting. More info on how to do this at:

Some third party apps also allow other colour schemes.

If you're looking for Halloween-related videos on PeerTube, there's a human-curated playlist at:

If you're viewing on a phone, swipe upwards on the first couple of video titles to browse the complete playlist.

If you're viewing on a computer, the complete list is on the right of the screen.

There are many ways to share Mastodon posts with other people:

- To share a post with your followers, click its "Boost" button (usually 🔄 arrows or 🚀 a rocket, depending on your interface or app)

- To share a post with people outside the Fediverse, click ⋯ on the post and then "copy link" or "copy link to status". Then paste this link wherever you want to share the post (e.g. on a website or on a different social network).

PLEASE BOOST
I have a friend who is on iPad who needs a Mastodon app that can be used successfully with voice commands. He does not have use of his hands. He tried the official Mastodon app and finds it unusable. Is there another app that might be better? ACTUAL experience helps. Please don't Google this for me or try to give advice on using an iPad. He's a very advanced user. Thank you!

Mastodon is part of a much larger social network called "The Fediverse". That means you can not only follow Mastodon accounts but also accounts from many other platforms such as PeerTube, Friendica, OwnCast, Pixelfed, BookWyrm etc.

You're probably already following some non-Mastodon accounts without realising it, because their posts show up in your timeline just like Mastodon posts, and you follow and interact with them exactly the same way.

BookWyrm is the Fediverse's alternative to Amazon's Goodreads. You can find out more about it at https://fedi.tips/bookwyrm-a-social-network-for-people-who-enjoy-reading

BookWyrm has a built-in catalogue of books to search, but if the book you want isn't in the results you can optionally add it manually. More info about doing this at https://fedi.tips/how-to-manually-add-a-book-on-bookwyrm

How to watch PeerTube videos offline:

1. Go to the video on web or official PeerTube app
2. Click ⋯ below the video
3. Select "Download"

Once it's downloaded to your device, you can watch the video even without an internet connection.

NOTE: This option only appears if the video's uploader has allowed downloads. If you're an uploader you can activate or deactivate downloads at Video > Manage > Customisation > Enable Download (tick or untick, then click Save).

It's cheaper and easier than you think to create your own @peertube server 🙂

🌱 If you're non-techy you can use managed hosting through https://fedihost.co or https://cloud68.co

🪴 If you're slightly techy you can install PeerTube through @yunohost at https://apps.yunohost.org/app/peertube

🌳 If you're very techy you can use the manual installation instructions at https://docs.joinpeertube.org

All support greatly appreciated! 🙂

p.s. The scammer is using many different accounts on many different servers, and they are using unusual characters for their names (for example swapping capital i for small L) to try to mess up reporting.

The most effective way to stop them is to click ⋯ and "report" on *every* spam you see, and keep doing it until they stop appearing. If your interface includes the option to forward the report anonymously, select this option so that it goes to the server where the scammer's account is.

⚠️ SCAM WARNING

There's another wave of scam spammers on the move, it's an old scam where they demand verification by clicking on a link.

❌ DO NOT click on the link in the spam. No genuine Mastodon admin would ever ask for anything like this. The link is trying to steal your personal info and/or credit card.

✅ DO report it by clicking ⋯ on the spam post and "Report".

There's a new very lightweight Fediverse platform that's just been released called littleFedi. You can follow its new official account at:

🌱 @littlefedi_official

Its official website including download and source code is at:

LittleFedi is intended for techy people who want to create their own Fediverse server using as few resources as possible.

It's written by @stefano (who also created the weather service FediMeteo).

You can delete or edit your own posts in Mastodon by clicking ⋯ and then "Delete" or "Edit". There's also a third option "Delete & re-draft" which is more rarely used but has some very useful niche functions.

All three of these options are explained and compared in this guide:

The guide also answers common questions about deleting posts, let me know if you have a question that isn't covered.

⚠️ Are you on the servers TheForkiverse.com or Toot.Community? Both of these are closing down very soon!

You need to transfer your account as soon as possible to another server if you want to keep your followers etc. The transfer has to happen before your current server closes down.

Here's an easy-to-understand step-by-step guide to transferring:

Here's a list of over 100 good reliable servers to transfer to:

You can subscribe to PeerTube channels in any podcasting app that allows adding feed addresses, such as AntennaPod, Apple Podcasts etc:

But wait, there's more! 😲

Thanks to the recent PeerTube 8.3 update creators can submit their PeerTube channel to podcast catalogues so that people can discover it without having to manually add a feed address. For submission-friendly links go to your channel's management page and select "Podcast".

p.s. If you want to, you can transfer your account from a Mastodon server to a GoToSocial server. There's more info about doing this in a video by @fedihost at https://video.fedihost.co/w/i2AGvZc69gnscfNnDPdVrN

p.p.s. You can also import your Mastodon (and Pixelfed) posts to GoToSocial, using an experimental free open tool called Slurp. However, Slurp does require technical skills so you may need a techy friend to help with this. More info at https://codeberg.org/vyr/slurp and https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/user_guide/importing_posts
