The latest news I'm following.

I'm trying to scrounge up good resources on how organizations like arts nonprofits and libraries might do "online presence" and "marketing" without doing any of that via facebook, x, or any other corporate-owned social media silo.
we've got a (cool) low-power FM public radio station and a couple of (very nazi) print newspapers in the area but like... is there a book on How To Public Media?

It's always gratifying when science backs up your intuition.

It turns out the most important factor in regenerative ag is... drum roll please...

"Horror Vacui" (lit. dread of empty space, in this case we want to "fear" not having lots and lots of different kinds of plants everywhere.

When I was a young man I read in an old Taoist book about a farmer who was so content with his life that he had never been to the next village over, even though he lived so close to them he could hear the cries of their rooster.

At the time it gave me a feeling of dull horror.

Now, I envy that farmer and hope to reach his level someday before I die. Times change.

> The regular early morning yell of horror was the sound of Arthur Dent waking up and suddenly remembering where he was.

No wonder humus was so mysterious! It doesn't exist! It's a snark!

> We now know that humus is an artifact of the alkali extraction methods used [to study soil] last century.

👉 "It is now clear that it is exudates from living plant roots feeding microbes around the roots that is the dominant source of organic matter in soil and the primary driver of soil biology. Inputs of the like of compost and manure that were thought to be vital turn out to be bit players and shockingly humus does not exist!"

What what waaat!?

This is insane (as in insanely cool!)

I can't watch these anymore, I'm too pent up because I can't get out there and do this stuff on my land (yet). It's all basically saying the same thing: once we really looked at the living soil with y'know science we find an incredible intricate living system with no clear distinction between the soil and the plants. It's all one self-symbiotic system. "All is One" is quite literal!

> «How could societies committed to the promise of science and reason give rise to such destruction and terror? The problem, they found, was not reason itself, but reason narrowed into mere instrumentality, the capacity to classify, predict, administer, dominate and control, decoupled from any notion of human dignity. Reason so conceived – as an intelligent servant – readily becomes, when enacted at scale, an instrument of barbarity.»

> «Part of what makes this model [ #AI / #LLM ] so attractive is that it is clean and measurable. It promises to turn the mystery of intelligence into a technical problem humans can solve: specify the objective, improve performance, reduce error, maximise reward. It offers a picture of mind that can be graphed, benchmarked, monetised and scaled. In a culture already devoted to metrics, this makes for a snug – and profitable – fit.»
