This will become evergreen, so people sticking by Mozilla need to understand that Mozilla isn't going to do anything "good" with AI -- they are trying to convince YOU it is good, and that's why they are doing these partnerships and nagging you to try out the AI features in #Firefox. For Mozilla, there is no debate - just give in - it's good!

The beauty of #Mozilla coming out against regulating #Google because they depend on the money Google pays them is that we're only a few years away from them saying that we can't regulate #AI companies for the very same reason -

"The AI #LLM companies pay us, and wouldn't it be a pity if #firefox went away if you regulate them?"

Mozilla now seems to want to entrench the worst of the web, as long as they get a cut of the proceeds.

It has been years since #Mozilla added new sync functionality to #Firefox sync - and forks are building on it without even extending the server.

We could actually be getting browser improvements instead of forced #ai integrations and nags if Mozilla wasn't intent on wasting time and resources to add to its declining marketshare.

Earlier I posted that #Firefox returning to #elonmusk #x was no worse than what former CEO Brendan Eich had done.

It has been so long that I forgot the details of what he had done - while #Mozilla using X is an implicit endorsement of Nazism, Eich had provided money to hurt #lgbtqia people directly.

I predict that Mozilla will follow up by advertising on X, so Mozilla has time to catch up here.

Worth remembering in the wake of the #mullvad donation, #mozilla #firefox moving back to #x and just #dhh and #rubyonrails - people and companies are actively funding these people and their hateful rhetoric.

This is happening very directly.

If they didn't have the gobs of money, they would be like you and me - posting on social media, volunteering, maybe a small donation here and there.

WITH the gobs of money, you can change society to hate the people you hate.

Clearly, this is the dark side of insincere virtue signalling - you will get punished by people who expect you to actually demonstrate your virtue.

When you ultimately fail since it wasn't sincere to begin with, you end up in the same pool as everyone else - with those who never claimed any kind of virtue.

Anyway, maybe this is just a shift for #Mozilla #Firefox - new CEO, mask off to totally scrape the barrel of whatever goodness was left in its userbase.

I suspect that the difference between using pirated SunOS/XNU/Windows sources is that those companies will sue to prevent their code from being pirated.

No one seems to be willing to represent the contributors that contributed code to their projects, not even the ones with copyright assignment - where is #canonical and #qt #fsf and #oracle to protect the code submitted under their CLAs?

Seems more like they would rather be on the side of the pirates than the contributors.

Is open source/free software over? It is really starting to feel like if people try, they won't be offered any protections - it will totally be a situation where we are just doing free labor for companies.

It seems that #opensource licenses were meant to protect capital, not people.

They enabled expropriating labor without pay, and now that capital can steal labor sans-license, the mask is off and it is "just tech".

Fundamentally, it seems that #freesoftware failed to recognize that like conservatism, there are in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

#opensource bound volunteer labor but did not protect it.

Thought experiment.

Linus tells us that the #Linux project uses #opensource because it results in "better technology".

Does that mean that if some superior closed source kernel sources became available Linux would merge it? Clearly, since Linux has never been a "social warrior" project, it shouldn't matter if the code is pirated, since technical merit is paramount.

If we say no, how is that different from using copyright encumbered #LLM sources?

To me, it seems clear that the reason that #Linux has more activity and driver support than the #BSD distros is because of copyleft and reciprocity - two aspects of "social justice" that protected contributors from their code being used without giving back.

I wrote about this a while ago: https://www.quippd.com/writing/2026/04/08/ai-code-is-hollowing-out-open-source-and-maintainers-are-looking-the-other-way.html but it feels like with the advent of #AI people are willing to look the other way to access the technical contributions of people who never consented to their works being infringed.

Calling #Wikipedia nerds and friends! I'm writing about the stuff happening in Wikipedia land, and I had a thought that I wanted to run past people who actually know what's up (yes, I am a Wikipedian, but a bit of a lapsed one).

Is there any connection to be found between the fact that #AI generated contributions were banned by Wikipedia recently, and the move to fire the community teams?

Perhaps the community was showing too much of its power?
