I think maybe stapling one of the Dutch zines in the middle of the chess club's meeting poster (or similar) would be a relatively non-destructive approach.
If anyone has any really good ones, especially if they're already in Dutch, that would be great. The kids are mostly pretty good in English, but native language is best.
Collecting some #antiai #zines for the 13yo to use at school.
* 3-part Dutch translation of Lauren Woolsey's "AI Sucks" https://ai.crutzen.eu
* Julie Setele's "AI is very bad, actually: A manifesto" https://juliesetele.com/2024/10/04/ai-is-very-bad-actually-a-manifesto/
* Kyle "Guante" Tran Myhre's "Less A, More I" https://guante.info/2026/08/19/aizine/
We both think it would be nice to label the GenAI posters in his school as AI Generated, but unsure how much trouble I should encourage him to get into in the short term.
I assured the 13yo that the normally quite reliable weather app said there was to be only 0.4 mm of rain between 8 and 9 AM.
Shortly after he headed off on his bike, it felt like 0.4 METERS of rain fell from above.
From release notes of LibreOffice 26.8:
”[It] contains no generative AI features. Documents are not transmitted to remote services for processing (…). This is a deliberate position.”

"I am damned if I am going to stand on a stage, having won a resounding victory.... and be demeaned and humiliated by nobodies," said Nigel Farager who declared himself the winner despite not having any data yet.
The path along the polders to the west of Zaandam was loaded with people and their glasses and camera and fancy cardboard boxes. 86% or whatever of was sounds like a lot, but it was still really bright out there. This photo is the best thousand or so images I've ever taken of an eclipse, thanks to a tree and a neighbor's house.
Well, my new filter for _"/p/"_ has been pretty good so far. I have it set to hide, so I can check its work.
Many (most? all?) of the non-Substack Substack sites use the form _domain.com/p/sitename_ and they're being caught in the filter. Nice.
> The border is porous. Myths nourish science, and science nourishes myth. But the value of knowledge remains. If we find the antelope we can eat.

> The confusion between these two diverse human activities – inventing stories and following traces in order to find something – is the origin of the incomprehension and distrust of science shown by a significant part of our contemporary culture. The separation is a subtle one: the antelope hunted at dawn is not far removed from the antelope deity in that night’s storytelling.

Moving from bookwyrm.social to @ramblingreaders and the handy 'move' feature on .social fails. Of course. Export and import it is.
I've been using .social for nearly two years and it's been getting slower and slower. The couple times I've reached out to the admin it's been "works for me"
Rambling readers feels like a completely different thing, it's been really responsive.
Reading _Autonomous_, @annaleen's novel featuring autonomous robots. Part of it that takes place at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Oddly, the most fantastical part of the story so far is not the robots or the cyberpunk mods, it's this sentence:
_“Jack’s lab was only two train stops from UBC...”_
The train goes to UBC? Time travel and benevolent aliens might be more believable than SkyTrain getting to campus in only 100 years. /s
The other #AskFedi is for a decent entry-level technical computer history book in the 14-17 yo range. I kind of want something that covers from Ada to today. Interested more in broad than deep so we can zoom in on aspects he finds interesting.
We have talked a bit about Turing and human computers and modern stuff, but so many gaps. It's all gap.
So, looking for 1) intro digital design projects book or video creator 2) computer history book recs

I have an anti-ai 13yo who had his first taste of digital logic in school this past year, and he wants to start building some things in Roblox or Minecraft so I would like to find something that has plans that are explained, show how it works, etc. Building small well explained circuits. YT has videos, but most seem to be "dig this and put this here" videos with the "how" but not the "why"

The Selfish Gene is a TERRIBLE BOOK. I couldn't make heads or tails of the plot, and I kept waiting for the main character, Gene, to show up, and he never did.

A thread of people from Twitter dunking on Richard Dawkins five years ago.
@Richard Dawkins
Kafka's Metamorphosis is called a major work of literature. Why? If it's SF it's bad SF. If, like Animal Farm, it's an allegory, an allegory of what? Scholarly answers range from pretentious Freudian to far-fetched feminist. I don't get it. Where are the Emperor's clothes?

Saw some video showing a video of a ~12 year old girl performing a drum lesson really well. Specifically a drum solo from Free Bird that her instructor seemed way more into than she was.
At the bottom of the video: "This young lady is cooler than ALL of us! And that drum set needed a cigarette after that."
Sorry, what? Fucking weird creeps.
So, I'm playing dumb, and just asking what it means. See if any of the old white dudes sharing it can explain it.
