TIL that passkeys have support for remote attestation built-in. Once enabled by a service, without a US-American phone running software signed by a US-American company, on which you need to be signed in with your legal identity (thus rendering you unable to use it if you're sanctioned by the US), there is a pretty good chance that you'll be unable to use your passkeys in the future. That seems pretty damn terrible.

Don't use passkeys.

The script standardized by Qin Shi Huang has now been officially encoded.

Unicode 18.0 was released last week, adding 13,007 characters to bring the total to more than 170,000. Of these new additions, 11,328 are Small Seal characters.

The amount of money Omarchy is getting is absolutely insane. The Python Foundation has an annual budget of around $5 million, the Apache Foundation around $3 million. Meanwhile a niche Linux distribution raised $18M in 20 days.

Edit: it's not about a Linux distro. Much as it is not about "fairness in women's sports". Or "ethics in gaming journalism". Or "we need everyone's ids to protect children". These are all pushing fascism. So is this.

A spec is not an unordered list of normative statements & headings.

It is an English *composition* with an *audience* (multiple, in fact). It should be a narration that carries its audience along as it efficiently & comprehensively builds up their understanding of the topic.

Today marks the 38th anniversary of Joe Becker's landmark document *Unicode 88*, the manifesto that first laid out the principles of a universal character encoding.

Thirty-eight years later, the work continues. Happy anniversary, Unicode!

What should your app return if it supports 20 languages and a user sets their system language to "French (Switzerland)", but you only support `fr-FR` / `fr`? Returning an English fallback might cause you to lose that user.

This issue is known as language tag matching. The i18n WG has just added a section on this topic to its best practices document. The underlying core specification is BCP 47, which defines two matching modes: Lookup and Filtering.

REFRESHED! Ruby Styling

Using a website in your own language and it just didn’t work properly?

That’s the kind of problem we work on at W3C.

We keep a Project Radar so everyone can see what the i18n activity is tackling right now: closing gaps in language support, reviewing standards, and building education resources.

Nice project. Raised https://github.com/NiklasMerz/webcompat/issues/15 to add i18n sources.
