2. A much earlier start than I expected, with a #thunderstorm & a #downpour rolling in at 5:30am. But that's how it goes this time of year, as we shift into real #summer warmth. Glad to be in a place that has real #weather, able to #experience the #seasons.

3. The #encouragement I've been receiving from friends for the #ReadyAndResilient Hour. We took some time to discuss feedback at the end of our hour on Wednesday & I'm reviewing it now.

You see the #rain continued, and the #ice kept getting thicker, and around 3:00 was when the power went out. I carried on — school work was still books and paper back then.

But as it got #dark and the hours ticked by, it began to get #cold. It was becoming clear that this might drag on for a while. And that it was time to start putting together a #plan.

So the second day of school in #1998 began with an about face, trudging back down the hill, across the street to the bus stop, and going home to figure out what to do with this unexpected #snow day.

(Reader, it was Jackie Brown in the theater, in an increasingly #deserted downtown.)

And there was a little bit of #adventure in the air, suited up to mount the snow banks and the Metro there and back. But it was as the afternoon wore on that the #survival #instincts kicked in.

Like a #zombie that morning I'd put on my school girl uniform, #Montreal #winter edition. Like thousands of us kids did every day. But by evening, I was transformed into #survival mode.

I had made it all the way to school, trudged up the hill when I got off the bus, only to be turned away by a complete stranger as I approached the door. I was skeptical at first.

"Dude, I've never seen you before."

But when I peered around the corner and saw the toppled trees, I realized he was right.

....parts of our #landscape were scarred for years afterward.

A few days after New Year's, as many of us were polishing up our resolutions, the #memory albums showed up. Images of trees encased in #ice crumpled transmission towers, the entire city frozen in place for 2 weeks.

I remember that week particularly well because it was only the second day of school when it started. I got dressed and got on the bus like a #zombie barely registering the noise of branches scraping the roof.
