@RadicalR @catsalad Stick with that theoretical dentist, I’d say

@aspuru @catsalad fwiw: ultrasonic is to automatic, what automatic is to normal

And unlike Philips shavers, I really do find that the more expensive ones get better. Higher frequency and higher strength. This is one area of commercialism that I do find has benefited me and everyone else presumably.

Perhaps it’s the Dyson moment to vacuum cleaners, that they were to dusting brushes.

Did you know Alt+F4 had friends?

Windows 2.x: How to Close a Window

There will be a test.

Mac users should be able to figure this one out.

#Windows2

Of course, we got Ctrl-S to copy Cmd-S "Save"

But we're still waiting for Ctrl-Q, I think?
You had to learn Alt-F4, for some reason.

And then there's these … omg ßæπ÷ç∫√

Windows 2.x still thought it "knew better" than Mac when it came to keyboard shortcuts …

Undo: Alt+Backspace
Cut: Shift+Delete
Copy: Ctrl+Insert
Paste: Shift+Insert

1990 would change that. Of course, the option-key shortcuts that Mac started in 1984 … ? Still waiting.

@atpfm Just a random shout-out that the t-shirts designed / selected by @siracusa — in particular the latest batch, e.g. M3 Ultra — are the best, nicest comfortable t-shirts I've ever owned

The tri-blend is incredibly good. Black Tri-Blend.

Is this newer than Vintage Black Tri-Blend? I've ordered tri-blend for a few years — mostly that dark-gray textured one, if that's just what "vintage" means — but if they've tweaked the pure black one at Cotton Bureau, they've excelled this time.

@bri_seven 1952 Superman really has office-dad energy. And why not. He looks like he can fix the sink, change a tyre, and then tell a story to his daughter or help his son with homework.

(to be honest, I wonder when the first signs of Windows registry DID appear?)

ResEdit (not RegEdit), but it turned up in a 1992 beta of Windows 95 … ever seen "WinPopUp" @siracusa ?

When you were 6, you probably wrote your own address, but despite the teacher’s wishes, added “Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, The Universe”

Well we’re now a few steps beyond that, and it seems every 20 years we add a new layer. (Interesting how old science fiction didn’t really know how to count “galaxies”).

There seems to be a 2020 short, of the same name and another adaptation of the same novel, and that’s in VR. But the 2024 feature length movie? Plenty of digital effects, but …

I should ask the expert @tvaziri please help 🙏

Hey @marcoarment is this a brand new Hollywood movie in VR format? And if not, shouldn’t it be? Tom Hanks and a some big names would propel this format.

The camera is always locked off, and sometimes the action goes around the sides.

@siracusa John, are you able to explain the difference between a game that exists on PC versus Steam (on Windows) vs XBox Gaming Pass (on a PC) … because Steam also exists on Steamdecks, and this opens the topic of cross-platform gaming.

Presumably XBox Gaming Pass is just a front-end to very different game binaries on PC and XBox hardware — and also I presume each XBox can emulate (just one?) previous XBox hardware — but is Steam cross platform? Does it exist on Android? COULD it exist on Android, for that matter?

Final question, and the point to all this: Is there any technical barrier to running Steam games on iOS and macOS? Or should I stay focussed on ARM Linux — who appear to have engineered 2 simultaneous wormholes to support high-end 64-bit Wintel software? https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/10/gaming-on-linux-with-apple-silicon-now-becoming-a-very-real-thing/ … not to forget the minor miracle, Asahi Linux even boots!

Or should I just think about Xbox Cloud Gaming instead? And GeForce Now?

@atpfm are you ruling out putting an nVidia GPU (newer and/or cheaper) in your Intel Mac Pro when you retire it from macOS duties, @siracusa ? It could function as a Wintel-only gaming machine … maybe a bit of x64 Linux for any reason necessary

(Steve Trouton-Smith has been informing everyone of the good news of MSFS 2024’s performance INCREASE versus 2020, yippee)

On the topic of future ARM dominance @atpfm — https://youtube.com/shorts/SOq5ha0hLAE

It would be nice for the old status quo of multiple companies competing in multiple components, on some kind of open platform

Nevertheless, unified memory and other perennial trends in miniaturisation will bring unavoidable rearrangements to the ecosystem — building CPUs and GPUs and RAM with modularity … end of days?

I’d love to see AMD continue to thrive in x64 and, just as importantly, in GPUs. Will I ever buy an AMD PC, for gaming or other Windowsing, that’s the question. *stares at MacPro7,1*

… or should I just hold out for a future Xbox and make my life easier …

The hill I will die on: We had HDR in the 1980s.

Flat-panel TVs had a lot to answer for, including the invention of SDR. The first decade were absolute garbage, especially to HD-CRT fans like me. #SDR #HDR #CRT #doctorwho #tv
