Well, hopefully I didn't hit the lottery and install infected packages from AUR. Only two thus far. I don't think I need any others, so I'll avoid them until they get this sorted. Why do malicious scumbags have to ruin it for everyone? Everything is a fucking grift, and it's really bringing me down. It'd be nice to do a Liam Neeson on these particular actors...

Well, goodbuy to FreeBSD, I hardly knew ye. KDE Plasma kept crashing. Can't have that because my Mom uses that computer, too. I did like it a lot, though, so I may put it on my laptop. Honestly, a bit sick of all this configuration now, so I'm going to time-out until tomorrow morning and give things a good think. I put CatchyOS on that computer with KDE Plasma. Runs very well. I think some music is called for now. The Breeders seem to be calling my name... ;>)

Very simple in some regards, yet complex in others. Should be a fascinating learning experience. Honestly, didn't take much to get me up and running. I did learn the hard way that way that you still have to tell FBSD to do stuff explicitly. Like load modules and the like. Had no problem with doas or changing my shell to BASH...

Got FreeBSD up and running with KDE Plasma. My Linux compatibiliy going. Need to learn more about that. I look forward to picking @hl 's brain now... ;>)

Well, ultimately, the LFS project was a failure. I never did get it to boot. I can fool around with it more and recompile some packages, but there is something not right, and I simply don't want to spend more hours than I already have to get something that I've done a hundred times over the years to deploy correctly. I don't think it's the kernel, I believe it's a flaw in udev or systemd and there is no way for me to tell until I can boot it and examine some variables. So I'm in a pickle. I will mothball this for the time being and spend some time with FreeBSD. Something always rises to the surface...

According to the message, I'm passing an empty string. So, I'm going to the older of these kernels and not change any options except for the one that handles block devices. With the current kernel, I'm going to configure it according to instructions...

Well, folks, gonna be building me some kernels tomorrow. I've tried every option on this sandwich, and something isn't right. I've downloaded a couple. Basically, the issue is that the kernel isn't recognizing my 'root' drive, but the bootloader is...

Well, the LFS situation is no bueno. The kernel panics. However, at least UEFI boot works. I think I know the culprit, and I'll have to chroot back into the environment and modify the kernel. Not a big deal, but I don't think I'll tackle it tonight. Look, this has gone amazing well up to this point, so I shouldn't be surprised that I made a single mistake. It happens with all the factors in play...

The moment of truth is coming. My LFS system is compiled. The kernel is compiled. A few system administration things, and we'll see if this thing has legs... Tomorrow. ;>)

Completed a lot of LFS tasks today. Had to start over completely yesterday because I made a mistake, but all is good now. Mainly, as you would imagine, it mostly about compiling packages, a little over a hundred I would say. However, it's not lost on me that a lot of trial and error went into setting up the structure, with help along the way from UNIX. I have about 70 more packages to compile. Then all the basic configuration, kernel, etc. This is going to be quite a little system when it's done. I'm excited to have this look at it...

Well, Linux from Scratch is going to take me days to implement, but I'll be the best at what I do when I'm done. Probably weeks for a desktop environment. I'm taking it slowly because there is a lot to take in, but I'm over the first hump. I'll take another pass tomorrow because I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment. A lot to do. I tend to think of this as a long term project / lab with no definite time frame, but I'd like to get the base up and running as soon as I can...

Decided to do a Linux from Scratch install for the educational value. It's the one goalpost I've yet to conquer. I'll do it from an existing Debian install. I've verified that all the tools are present and up to date. Now I have to resize a partition for it so that I have space. I have plenty of RAM and an 8-core Intel i7, so I should be fine...

I'm computing bored. I could start converting some of my older scripts to a more robust form, or I could install Gentoo or Linux from Scratch. I'll consult the ol' tarot deck for answers... ;>)
