Aaaaand were up to date again lol.

Spent a chunk of today (like a few hours) getting Mastodon up to date, as I was running into some strange issues and had put off updating due to needing to find time.
Literally 10 minutes after getting 4.7.4 working, they release another update lol...

For years I've read stories about it on Reddit, but finally today I had the rite of passage site visit.
Total site outage caused by cleaners getting into the network cupboard and unplugging / plugging stuff in to use their vacuum cleaner.
Do I now quality as a "grey beard"?

"You did the right thing, even if it doesn't feel like it now"

bluesky added a little 1/x marker at the end of posts to show number of posts in a thread and frankly fedi needs to copy that right the fuck now

edit: before you reply with "just use a server with a character limit you're happy with anything else is twitter bullshit" please consider that there may be other reasons why one might wish to append a reply to a post one wrote earlier

It's been a good few years since I've used one of these. Such a shame that Windows 11 makes a dog's dinner of the driver situation with the PL2303 chips 🙄 Really wish more companies would move away from Windows, especially for real technical work. It's just not friendly for techs anymore.

My first night out clubbing since my breakdown / quitting society / going on antidepressants. What a vibrant world it is when you don't have the million voices of anxiety ringing in your ears. Feeling the immense ability of my mind processing every sound, movement & advancing ahead to predict what's coming is an incredible sensation. I could hear the DJ's future movements before he began, read the body language of individuals & navigate the storm of light & noise as if I were in a tranquil void.

Last August I picked up a factory re-certified 18TB Exos hard drive for £223.
Figuring I'd get another to pair them in a RAID mirror, I looked at what the exact same re-certified drive costs from the same supplier; £435! Guess I'll not be getting another right now :(

I got this thing for £0.50 at a car boot sale a few weeks back, and it's been so much fun playing back some of my old childhood cassettes. I've already has to repair it twice and the audio is pretty low quality, yet there's something about it that brings far more joy than just putting on Spotify. Sometimes, it's the simple things.

I always knew the person I am today wouldn't live forever, but I'm surprised that at just 15 years old, he's dying. Only a few people left alive in this world ever met the first version of me, who gave up nearly everything he valued to let 2.0 ravage body and mind trying to fit into a society that's sicker than a rat that ate warfarin.
Everything is built on borrowed time now, and sooner or later I'm going to have to hand control back...

In a way, I'm relieved to be fading away.

This year was meant to be the one where I took control and had amazing adventures. Instead, it's all gone spiralling out of control. The ships controls no longer seem to respond an I'm tumbling into the void.

Hey @EUCommission have you considered just like, buying Mozilla and making Firefox the sovereign EU browser?

Or even just funding a non-profit to maintain an EU fork which does things like respect EU laws and regulations

Think about it

I swear every tech / nerd project I show a little interest in descends into absolute drama within a few days 😭 https://blog.meshcore.io/2026/04/23/the-split#

Hey, I heard you all like janky UI pictures. This one comes courtesy of Yealink's "state of the art" video conferencing system running Microsoft Teams 😮‍💨 If this was the worst bug on these systems it would be funny, but it's probably the smallest issue lol...

Im in the Netherlands (Amsterdam / Haarlem) for a few days and have brought a #meshcore node with me. It was amazing seeing messages come in from 30+ miles while on the aircraft, and I'm seeing constant chatter on the ground too.
If there's anything cool / any channels I should know about while here, please let me know! Node name is "VervainNet Mobile 📻"

Hello #homelab admins, I'm looking for recommendations on a way to monitor basic stats of a Debian server, namely remaining disk space. Ideally something relatively low maintenance that can notify me when a threshold is reached, for example; disk space has less than 20% remaining.

I had a backup job run on a server last night that maxed out a disk, and I wasn't aware that the backups had grown so aggressively.

Thank you in advance :)

The self hoster's paradox...

Everything working well: "I'm bored, there's nothing to play with 🥱"

Something breaks: "This is not how I want to spend my Sunday night, why do I do this 😭"

SMTP relays for small self hosters seem to be getting harder to find.
❌ SendGrid killed their free tier, now only 60 days free.
❌ Mail2go wouldn't even accept my email address at sign-up.
❌😡 MailerSend rejected my account because I tried to send from a residential IP address (the whole point in needing a relay lol).
✅ Maileroo seems to have been simple so far, we'll see if it lasts 🤞
I'd happily pay a few quid a month for a SMTP relay if it was offered.

The NHS has crumbled to almost nothing and we're arguing about flags.
The Online "Safety" Act is being used to censor war crimes and we're arguing about flags.
Utility companies are funnelling billions into shareholders pockets and we're arguing about flags.
Wages are a decade behind where they should be and we're arguing about flags.
The trains are overpriced and some of the worst in Europe and we're arguing about flags.

Fuck me the #UK isn't far behind the US now 🤦 #ukpol #ukpolitics
