TIL that the term "bariatrics" was invented by one doctor in 1961, using the bar- prefix meaning weight or pressure and -iatrics meaning medical treatment. The bar- prefix is also used in barometer, a device which measures the current weight or pressure of the air. #etomology

Fediverse, the social media system for 40+ year old people who built the world wide web and regret it.
Had to go to the derm doc for a minor procedure last week. Got to chatting and I asked him the biggest shock he ever encountered during one.
He said a pt came for a routine pilar cyst. He went to remove it and suddenly a flood of clear fluid emerged. The pt had a fall about a month before that they thought too minor to mention in pre-op.
That fall had led to a skull fracture and the "cyst" was cerebrospinal fluid pooling between skull and skin. Sent to ER surgery for full recovery.
SerDe isn't as catchy is MoDem.
TIL that cars registered in 42 Pennsylvania counties are exempt from annual emissions tests because the requirement is based on population density and air quality needs under the federal Clean Air Act
With only 27 days until the mid-terms and temperatures in the mid 40s, my rural neighbors are posting to Nextdoor and Facebook in shock and anguish that it just cost over $1,000 to refill their heating oil tanks. One writes "Do you think the price of oil will go down before the end of winter?"

Webscale: a chalky residue deposited on architecture when ordinary software is repeatedly exposed to trace amounts of Google engineering blog posts.
Commonly found on:
Removal usually requires a strong solution of “what problem are we actually solving?” and a wire brush.
Severe cases may require application of a harsh cleaner known as Monolith™. Apply liberally until the architecture becomes understandable again.
For deeply embedded Webscale deposits, use PostgreSQL at full strength. Do not dilute with Cassandra.
Need to reconfigure my iPhone so when I ask it where my keys are instead of playing a sound on them it just pops up a dialog that reads "they're in the pocket of your other hoodie like always, dumbass."
A non-partisan reminder:
Voting isn’t marriage. It’s public transport. You’re not waiting for "the one." You’re getting on the bus. And if no bus goes exactly to your destination, you don’t stay home and sulk. You take the one that gets you closest to where you want to be.
If my script is accurate (and at a whopping 14 lines of py there isn't a ton of space for defects) then 4,422 of the people I follow have posted at least one thing in the last 365 days. I had honestly expected to close closer to 40% than 16% but good on all of you for being awesome participants in the network!
"Software developers are not okay"

The software industry is becoming increasingly hostile to those who work in it. The uncertainty is affecting even those who believe in the promises of tech.
