i just looked into @joinloops for the first time. i tried a bunch of videos from loops.video, and none play on my laptop 😔.
the web console reveals that it is indeed a codec issue.

it's worse than i expected, btw. MP4/H.254/H.265 videos are all i can get from many open-sourcey social media sites, including #Mastodon, #PeerTube, #Invidious.
(some may offer their instance-owners to change the default media format, but i have not encountered such an instance)

i actually first encountered those sounds in the game "Hover!" which came on the Windows 95 CD.
a commenter explained they were from a sound library called "The General Series 6000" by Sound Ideas.

i already found the bird calls used in Age of Empires, and i suspect that i will find a fair amount of the sounds used in StarCraft. :D
