#Fediverse is a *social* network, right? About being different from corporate anti-social media. Has ambitions to be more diverse, inclusive, cohesive. To provide inter-community social networking where people with similar interests find each other and interact.
Like the #ActivityPub developer community, for instance. The group of people who make all this possible in the first place. Together they uphold the fediverse technology ecosystem and are collectively responsible for evolving it. They chose fediverse as their communication medium, dogfooding their creations, even though this comes with its disadvantages. #Microblogging is ephemeral and fleety and discussions are dispersed and fragmented. There are clear points of improvements for the #fedi, frequently discussed.
What's very odd is that most AP devs hardly:
1. Engage with other AP devs posts.
2. Boost each other's msgs for visibility.
3. Use hashtags for discoverability.
Low-hanging fruit for improvement?
The Secretary of Finance of the #Dutch #government has called the full migration of the ICT services of the Dutch Tax department to #Microsoft 365 to be halted, and to instead investigate how these services can be hosted on-premises or on sovereign #IT infrastructure that is managed by the department.

Absolute Madness how everyone thinks it is just okay to sprinkle magic opt-in / opt-out and other control words in the profile description of someone's #fediverse account!
Why do we have #ActivityPub be extensible if not for supporting a native mechanism to deal with consent? Why should there be out-of-bound ugliest of ugliest hacks?
With all that jazz being introduced it is no wonder people opt-in for #ATProto and other more sane social networking protocols that have robust protocol specifications, and not a metric ton of protocol decay to poop on top of your basic AP implementation so it becomes interoperable until the next on-the-fly hack by someone else breaks your nice code..
Fediverse is protocol impl + eternal whack-a-mole development and maintenance this way.

Remember the recent #news that the #Dutch government chose for #sovereignty in their prudent decision not to let the critical infrastructure around #DigiD be managed by a foreign (US) commercial enterprise?
Well, the more recent news is that the Chief Privacy Officer of the Dutch #government, who was behind this initiative, has been fired. In the #petition I shared below Pieter van Oordt is called a "whistleblower". But that is an inaccurate description for a person who is just doing their job, and doing it well: Protecting our #privacy!
Sign the petition and :boosts_appreciated: boost this message, so this matter gets the attention it deserves, and hopefully Pieter will be reinstated in the CPO position to continue this important work on #DigitalSovereignty.

The issue with so many forms of #activism is that it stops with awareness-raising on the wicked problems and, with a cacophony of so many problems being projected at people in endless doomscrolls all of the time, it has a strong stifling effect. We press the 🚨 panic button, and panic ensues. We become unable to see the solutions, and how we may contribute to them. Sowing chaos is the weapon of our enemy, and painting yet more problems a known misinformation tactic.
Here's the good news:
At any one time the number of good normal everyday people having the same basic needs for simple happy life in freedom, far far outnumber the relatively minor group of truly bad actors. These people are involved in countless uplifting and positive activities every day. Our task should be to raise awareness to that and offer countless pathways for people to join up in these constructive efforts, so that every person becomes enabled to contribute their 2 cents worth to making solutions grow and prosper.

Some of the cost savings are discussed in the HN thread in the top comment with an observation that "Payment processing costs are a scam", and it fits well with efforts to move away from the dependence on #Visa and #Mastercard onto #Wero (the successor to the Dutch #iDEAL payment system).
Gov.uk has replaced #Stripe with #Dutch provider #Adyen. 😃
If you are integrating with Stripe it might be worth doing a price comparison with other payment providers.

we have a Forgejo instance at the Dutch government now and it's great!
A lot of the UI is actually smoother and faster than GitHub, there's no annoying upselling, no forced AI ('are you sure you don't want this reviewed by an agent?'), and the fact that we run rather than rent it seems optimal strategically.
