I'm 56 now and my memories of childhood are maybe tainted by my own experiences as an adult, but also have the benefit of looking in from the outside.
I wonder if my parents ever felt happy?
They had very fortunate lives. They had income and could not only buy a house, but built a home in the bush. They were of Anglo descent and lived in a very structured society where everything was explained on the evening news at night. People had weekends and took road trips.
And they were terrible, terrible, terrible parents even before the divorce. Looking back, I barely knew them at all. My mum left first, then later my dad couldn't be bothered being a dad.
Maybe they were happy once they weren't together anymore. Maybe I never saw that. Can't shake this feeling that, back then, the worst thing you could be as a child was happy. And they spent most of their lives tearing each other down too.
I'm 56 now and I share a small apartment with my wife. She's just so wonderful. She makes everthing better just by being there. We do stuff to make each other happy. That seems normal now. I worry about external stuff all the time, but inside our little apartment I feel safe and loved. I don't know if my parents, for all the benefits of being boomers, got to experience that in a relationship.
