Haunting opening track that sets the mood perfectly. Other songs are a mix of 30s style cabaret, 60s James Bond and sinister calliope music that wouldn’t be out of place in an abandoned fairground.

As a result, I didn’t listen to the rest of the album quite as much, which was an oversight because it’s excellent. After the haunting ambient sounds of their debut and the more dance and glam sounds of the next two, this album strikes a balance with acoustic elements mixed with dreamy, shoe-gazy keyboards. Alison Goldfrapp’s ethereal vocals (and occasionally surreal lyrics) are the main attraction. Gorgeous stuff!

Back in the day I used to have an MP3 player that I would plug into my car stereo. By the inevitable logic of alphabetical sorting, the track A&E would always start playing automatically when I turned the car on, and I would always listen before switching to something else. I always associate this track with setting off on journeys on a summer’s day, and the hope and optimism that flows from that.

All clear! Quicker than expected and at least I know that my scaly skin isn’t a sign of Deep One heritage.
At the hospital for a mole check. Looks like it’s busy today but at least I’ve got my kindle and a bottle of water.
Took a day off work for a walk around Cannon Hall and Cawthorne park in the sunshine and got a close up view of this magnificent heron, as well as geese, koi carp and hidden glades.
Lyrically and vocally, the songs verge on the fantastical, especially on the second side with more ogres, fairies and mythical lands than a game of Dungeons and Dragons, but they are never po-faced about it. Indeed, the final track dissolves into a drunken chorus of ‘I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside’ which is the perfect ending.

This is the sound of a band determined to make a name for themselves, regardless of genre - were they glam, metal, prog or what? The answer is all of the above.
It’s still a mystery quite how Brian May nailed those unique guitar sounds that had people convinced that they must have been using synthesisers or studio tricks, until he would get up on stage and play them live, note for note.

One of the greatest albums of all time, by one of the greatest bands of all time, without a shadow of a doubt. Their debut album had had a lot of promise, but for the follow up they really turned everything up to a metaphorical 11. If those rock riffs and production techniques sound familiar now, it’s because they invented them and showed everyone else how it was done.
Just listened to this amazing live record from Laurie Anderson - many thanks to @buffyleigh who alerted me to it! I’ve been a fan for over 40 years and this album is a great selection from her back catalogue

However, this album is much more concerned with the real world - Dancing Out With The Moonlit Knight talks about Wimpy Bars and Greenshield stamps, and The Battle of Epping Forest is not about warring elves and goblins, but is actually about violent London street gangs.
Selling England By the Pound by Genesis

It might not be immediately obvious, but this was a transitional album for Genesis. The classic lineup of Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett and Rutherford was in a good place, coming off a successful album and associated live tour, and the recording process sounds like it was happy and relaxed. They had a reputation as one of the most inventive prog bands of the 70s with all of the flourishes and fantasy that entails.

When I first heard this back at the turn of the millennium I thought it was some sort of novelty record for kids. In a sense, it is. Listening to the whole thing shows it to be nasty, misogynistic, crass and unfunny. Most egregiously of all, it made Dido into an international star.
