It's been a while so it felt like it was "time" for this one again.

For many people, the #Linux vs #Windows vs #Mac debate is a privilege — it assumes you can choose. But working with the Computer Upcycle Project, I've seen the real choice is often Linux vs no computer at all.

~95% of donated computers are "too old" for Windows 11 or macOS. Linux installs on them anyway, adding 10+ years of life to machines #Microsoft and #Apple called trash.

This isn't Linux vs Windows. It's Linux vs e-waste.

Don't get me wrong. I am not suddenly against donating to Signal, indeed I would say that if you regularly use it I would actually recommend you do donate if you can afford to (even a one off is better than nothing) because if this revenue model works there is less chance that they look at other (more privacy invasive) ways of financing.

My problem is that ending a subscription shouldn't be hard. Making it hard and non-obvious is a dark pattern. I expect that from many companies but not Signal.

So I have had paid a monthly donation to #Signal for years. For reasons I cannot be bothered to go into right now I decided to put my subscription on hold for a bit.

Now, I have to say, I do not like how this is implemented on Signal (for Android). It is harder and less obvious than it should be.

Settings → Donate to Signal → Donate to Signal → Switch to 'Monthly' → Click the tiny cancel option right near the bottom.

Come on Signal I love you and all but you can do better.

It all looks so fragile but I suppose in reality the plastic provides a lot of protection to those thin wires.

Ever wondered what the NFC antenna (that allows for touchless payments) looks like inside your credit/debit card?

P.S. I do think it's stupid that N26 choose to write account details on this card. I generally favour numberless cards anyway but here it is doubly annoying since its possible to read the details from either side of the card.

I recall years ago in London buying an armchair made of reeds and bamboo. It was very light so I decided to take it home myself on the underground, rather than pay a delivery charge.

Of course that as a little akward and though I picked a time that was off peak there were more people than expected travelling. So I sat on the chair. People laughed a little but sitting on it was more comfortable and I actually took up less space. So win, win. 😆
