…we’re now looking up how the French industrial base evolved in the 1910’s.

11yo: Dad, how did the French build more tanks than anyone else in WWI?

Me: You’d know better than I would. I thought the UK invented tanks.

11yo: They did but France also did a bunch of research and produced way more tanks. The Renault was smaller versus the British Mark I, but the Renault had a true turret on top so it could aim better.

Me: Obviously.

Two good friends have gotten divorced in the past couple of years and all I can say is if your partner shows you who they are, believe them, no matter how physically attractive they may be. Oy.

(Don’t do drugs, kids. Fucking hell.)

At the cinema lobby bar last night a dudebro was very confidently explaining to his date how Bitcoin is the future. She then told him how we fought the Civil War in the 1930’s. We’re doomed.

Friend of mine and I are going to see Other Mommy tonight because we both love horror films.

But. Uh. The reviews. The reviews sure are something.

I don’t get Miro. I feel like I should really like it (it’s Jef Raskin’s ideas brought to life, at least some of them), but I don’t quite get it. PEBCAK I’m assuming.

Has something happened in the last like two weeks? I’ve gotten more SMS spam (non-political) in the last two weeks than I have in the last six months. It’s up to five or more a day.

It’s all hyperlocal too, tree trimming, wanting to buy my house. So someone leaked my phone number-address. Yay.

Picked up 15yo tonight after the football game.

15yo: Dude the other team was talking so much shit, I mean crap.

Me: Language.

15yo: Dad you literally just said “fucking traffic fuck that shit” and called the guy in front of us an asshole.

Me: He was driving like an asshole!

You know who’s a great songwriter? Suzanne Vega.

Doing a telemedicine appointment and the doctor uses this system called Klara. Klara doesn't work in Chrome or Safari, even though it says it does.

It wants me to download the iOS app if the browser doesn't work.

The app wants to sign in using SSO, which opens in a browser and, you see where this is going.

That eventually works but it doesn't let me type a space in the field for "first and last name" so I'm robking on this call.

So glad they have all my private info...

Would GOSPLAN have succeeded with modern computers and telecommunications? It certainly would’ve helped, I’d imagine.

I realize the plural of anecdote isn’t data but I am at least a little unsure of these numbers. I know a lot of families of four who make less than $178,000/yr and seem to be relatively comfortable even in the Austin area.

I need to look more into the definition of “comfortable” because it’s entirely possible they have a different idea than I do

The median income for a family of four in the United States is $124,000 a year, according to The Motley Fool.

The amount of money needed to “live comfortably” (according to The Visual Capitalist) for a family of four ranges from $188,000 in Mississippi to $330,000 in Massachusetts.

Even the mean income for a family of four, which is pulled higher by the absurd income of the upper 10%, is $178,000, still less than what’s needed to live comfortably in Mississippi.

“Past mathematicians didn’t have LLMs.”

“Yes and Fermat didn’t have a wider margin.”

Is this anything I can’t tell. It feels appropriately pithy but I can’t tell if it actually comes across with what I’m trying to say.

So if you’re new to working with regular expressions you can either take this as hopeful or despairing. The choice is up to you.

I have written multiple industrial strength regular expression engines. I have, over the years, written thousands upon thousands of regexes for lexers, network fingerprints, data mining, all that jazz. I have spoken at conferences about regexes and their implementation and underlying theory.

Anyway yeah any time I write a regex there’s like a solid 62% chance I fuck it up in some obvious way.

I thought we had leftover pasta from dinner last night for lunch. I was vaguely looking forward to it. Apparently one of the kids ate it for breakfast.

This is the worst thing to happen in 2026.
