Every city deserves a hackerspace, and now Toruń, my hometown, has one too.
For some context: @hswaw is a volunteer-ran non-profit community of tinkerers. This Supermicro is our best gear, and it supports not just our services, but those of 3 other hackerspaces. And soon, it will support @mykoryza -- a non-profit that aims to host web services (such as Fediverse) for the public.
If that's something you'd like to support, you can :)
This is a long shot, but: does anyone have access to a Supermicro H11DST-B *version 2.x* motherboard?
We (@hswaw) suspect that the only important difference with 1.x is a larger NOR flash for the firmware. If so, a little hot air action would allow an upgrade to Zen 2 CPUs, and get big perf/power-efficiency gains on a budget.
Boosts much appreciated!
Inspired by an industry-wide push to financially support their favorite (and politics-aligned) Linux dotfiles, I have decided to make a symbolic donation to @ar 's nibylandia, my go-to place for NixOS config snippets.
Alas, I don't have a million bucks lying around.
@kornel Hii! Do you have any recommendations for learning Rust?
I’ve been hacking away on an embedded (embassy) project over the past week as my first rust project, and I think this was a mistake. The whole experience has been awfully painful, since I’m fighting on multiple fronts at once. I think I should take a step back and do something easier (desktop/cli/server) first.
Any tips?

Friends! I'm looking for remote work in:
- systems programming of all sorts
- distributed systems
- performance engineering
- next-gen tooling and infra broadly speaking
I'm a software engineer with 20 years of experience. More about my work: https://radex.io/hire-me/
I'm very rarely available for work! You will not regret hiring me ☺️
(Boosts and introductions much appreciated!)
Sanity check: online search (google, ddg) is way worse than 5 years ago, right? I'm not imagining this, it really did go to shit?
I feel like I'm being pushed to talk to clankers to find things online I feel confident used to be easy to _just_ search for.
I'm adding a "Human-written" label on top of all my blog posts, linking to a brief LLM policy: http://radex.io/about/llm-policy/
This isn't virtue signaling, I just hate it when I start reading something that seems interesting and then realize (or just suspect) that it's slop.
I want to start with a pledge that I have spent more time writing this than you will reading it (and that all em-dashes are — in fact — mine)
I'm dusting off my blog.
I don't touch it often, so first order of business is to get the static page generator working again. This was a lot less painful than last time thanks to Nix. I just pinned the old Ruby and Bundler versions I used last time and it works!
(I wish I picked something written in Go or something I wrote myself)
While I only migrated now, I've been using Forgejo for a year or two and:
1. It's fine. Maybe a bit jankier UI than GH, but it's pleasant enough to use. Certainly good enough for any personal or community project.
2. Hosting a Forgejo instance is not difficult. Achieving a better uptime than GitHub is not a challenge, even for an amateur admin. (And of course, there's https://codeberg.org/)
Good bye GitHub! I migrated all of my projects (mostly vintage) to a self-hosted¹ Forgejo instance here: https://code.hackerspace.pl/radex
For now, I only archived these repos on GH, just so I don't break URLs.
¹ - @hswaw's instance, which I occasionally help maintain
I'm looking for a C compiler that:
- is simpler and smaller than TinyCC
- is capable of compiling TinyCC
- is written in *very* simple C or a language simpler than C
- can plausibly support risc-v (I can add codegen myself, just can't have deeply hardcoded x86 assumptions)
- has a FOSS license
- is not GNU Mes
Does anything matching these criteria exist?
Time for a coming out:
I'm a Nix user now.
I use nix-darwin on my laptop. My home server runs NixOS. My Raspberry Pis run NixOS.
I help manage and maintain ~13 more NixOS machines at @hswaw. A few of them are entirely my fault.
And if you ask me about it, I might even try to evangelize you!
Look what they've done to me! It took them 6 years to convert me, sure, but they got me!
One time, label printing was down for two weeks because no one wanted to debug this cursed setup.
Turns out, the label printer was unplugged from the power outlet 😐
Inventing computers was a mistake.
An absolute rube goldberg machine at @hswaw :
1. User clicks "Print" on spejstore, our inventory system, a Python/Django project
2. spejstore's backend calls spejstore-labelmaker, a Ruby microservice, that calls spejstore's API back for item details and generates a PDF label
3. spejstore-labelmaker calls printservant, a Node.js HTTP-to-IPP proxy service
4. printservant tunnels through beyondspace to call CUPS via IPP on printmaster, a NixOS-managed SBC, which talks to a label printer via USB
