this is a service-toot for all you young people out there who have never seen this video, and also for all you old farts who forgot about this video. it is one of the greatest explainer videos of all time, because it does not explain, but you understand.

appearently, fox news removed the stock ticker – a cultural constant on US news TV – from the news, to avoid showing the ongoing slaughter.

Mal wieder. 🤮 - peter purgathoferpeterpur@hci.social3/31/2025retooted Marcin Wichary
I took some old pixel fonts, turned them into vector fonts, but normalized their cap height… so the original pixel size is now serving as this new strange property – kind of like “pixel resolution.”
It’s kind of interesting to play with! I made a little playground and you can also download all the fonts I made there: https://aresluna.org/pixel-fonts/

🚨 Let’s Encrypt at risk from Trump cuts to OTF: “Let’s Encrypt received around $800,000 in funding from the OTF”
Dear @EUCommission, get your heads out of your arses and let’s find @letsencrypt €1M/year (a rounding error in EU finances) and have them move to the EU.
If Let’s Encrypt is fucked, the web is fucked, and the Small Web is fucked too. So how about we don’t let that happen, yeah?
(In the meanwhile, if the Let’s Encrypt folks want to make a point about how essential they are, it might be an idea to refuse certificates to republican politicians. See how they like their donation systems breaking in real time…)

Did you know that the "fiercely independent pro-Europe" news site euronews.com is 97% owned by a VC firm run by a close friend of Hungary's Viktor Orbán?
That the the International Federation of Journalists called for a European parliamentary inquiry into the Euronews manipulation of the 2024 European Parliament election?
That aforementioned VC firm was fined for facilitating money laundering and financing of extremist organizations?
Be very wary of @euronews.

Apparently Amazon doesn‘t mind at all that the book has been flagged as misusing AI and been taken down from Springer’s website. You can still buy copies from Amazon stock for 139,40€, despite two negative reviews.Advanced Nanovaccines for Cancer Immunotherapy: Harnessing Nanotechnology for Anti-Cancer Immunity https://amzn.eu/d/ghjLtvN

because science is (inherently) slower than industry, we usually learn about the effects of new technology only when (at least some) damage has been done.
this raises the question why we let industry do potentially dangerous things all the dime without even asking for some research in advance.
or, put in the words of alan kay, there is such a thing as »inverse vandalism«: creating terrible things and releasing them into the world without due diligence.

@JMarkOckerbloom @peterpur Amazon apparently deleted all the reviews and marked it "not eligible for review"... if you needed another reason to distrust Amazon.

i would surmise that this is only the tip of the iceberg.
given that scientific publishers have mostly given up on quality assurance measure that are not based on the free (=exploitative) work of scientists, we are diving head over heels into a crisis of scientific publishing – a crisis that has been looming for some time now ( https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/ees.2016.0223 ) and has only been accelerated by the lure of genAI.

»advanced nanovaccines for cancer immunotherapy« by nanasaheb thorat, a book published by springer, contains the phrase »As an AI language model« on page 25.
this raises a couple of significant questions: is this book still trustworthy, if it was written using an AI that we know produces text containing »alternative facts«. what is the actual harm such a book can cause? what are the quality assurance measures at springer actually worth?
btw. this book costs $100+.
