New in iOS 27.2: com_apple_MobileAsset_Vision_AgeEstimation

Seems to be a CoreML model that takes a 128x128px image called "facecrop" and outputs an age number. What could go wrong?

Talking to some people at #Akademy2026 made me even more interested (desperate?) to attend #40C3 😭

I wish I could open a wormhole between my home and Europe. Something faster and cheaper than a 12h flight.

Between July 27 and August 6, if your iPhone was already on iOS 18.7.8, Software Update showed "update to iOS 18.7.8" and would install 26.5.2 instead. Several liquid glass haters who were intentionally avoiding iOS 26 got screwed 💀

Okay, I uploaded the Artemis II stream to Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/nasa-artemis-ii-primarystream

Will probably take hours for IA to process the file. And if a hundred people try to download from IA and it gets slow, well... that's why I posted a torrent :P

Based on the number of likes/reposts vs number of actual downloads, I guess kids these days don't know how to use BitTorrent anymore. I'll try to upload it to Internet Archive but it will take a while.

I saved the entire Artemis II video stream (60GB, 230 hours, 1080p) if anyone wants it.

Fire up your BitTorrent client and get this: https://data.nicolas17.xyz/NASA-ArtemisII-Live-Mission-Coverage-m3kR2KK8TEs.mkv.torrent

@mjg59 Shower thought, assuming hardware attestation lets you know the laptop logging in to your corporate system is legit, and U2F or something lets you know the user logging in is legit etc, do you also match up those two identities to prevent Bob from logging in using Alice's laptop? Is it common to do that, some kind of device+user allow list?

(I'm not setting up anything like this, just curious)

I spent most of the day ~unsuccessfully trying to download the new zip files with Epstein documents. Really weird stuff happening with that DOJ server, I suspect they deleted the files but the CDN kept serving cached pieces maybe? so I searched for more CDN IPs to try to squeeze more data out of them.

I got 80% of dataset 10 (then someone else said they had the whole file and uploaded it), and 25% of dataset 9 (apparently more than anyone else in r/DataHoarders managed to).

Thanks to The Cloud this cost me an additional $0.23 on top of my usual VPS costs 😅

Actually I extend my question to non-proprietary apps too. Is there any Electron app complying with the LGPL of the web engine?

A school teacher sent a strange email to KDE sysadmins asking about login problems when trying to see their "certification" (?!), and it took me some googling to figure out that they were probably looking for the Kentucky Department of Education.

First time I see this particular confusion happen. Wrong KDE, sir.

I wonder if there's a single proprietary Electron app complying with the LGPL license.

Fall is a lovely season, where status pages start turning from green into different shades of yellow and red 🍁

Getting desperate enough to ping @mjg59 for EFI help...

How do I get Linux kernel panics to save logs I can look at later? My kernel log says "pstore: Registered efi as persistent store backend", yet if I trigger a kernel panic, there's nothing in /sys/fs/pstore. How do I debug this? Is my laptop firmware incapable of storing pstore efivars or what?

Apple released an update to iOS 26.0b1 specifically for the iPhone 15 and 16 series. Release notes say "Some iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models might show a low battery symbol and be unable to start up after updating to iOS 26 beta 1".

Comparing the IPSWs, the only difference seems to be in the bootloader.

Hundreds of people on Twitter insist the background blur looks better now, but nobody can provide a side-by-side comparison to prove it changed at all. Placebo effect is strong...

Hey Apple, what? Xcode 16 can no longer run apps on iOS 12-14, and the docs were wrong since WWDC until now? Isn't it a bit late to be announc-- I mean silently documenting this change? 🤨
