Yikes

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or being able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.

I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:

Air Canada continues to outperform my expectations of them. It’s truly impressive.

If you/your project is affected by DigitalOcean stopping their OSS credits program, please shoot me a PM immediately. Might be able to help.

Boosts for visibility would be appreciated.

A bit off topic, but it's International Coffee Day and I think this is my new favourite name for a cafe. (Yes, it's a real place.)

Digital Ocean sunset the open source credits program which we used to help offset the server costs.

We could really use more support, please consider donating and sharing this for more reach!

Over and over again, I keep hearing and reading things by people seeking "nuance" in how they approach AI, and the best I can do for nuance is:

If a technology entails huge social, political, psychological and environmental costs, then you should only use it to perform tasks that are worth those costs.

None of the uses people are currently making of AI are worth the actual (as opposed to monetary) costs. Any "nuance" beyond that feels like rationalization.

Much of the hard work of protest is organizing protest, not actual protesting. Convincing folks that they won't be alone if they do stand up / speak loud / walk out.

@vtrlx shall I bring my thoughts to the table again?

Cooperating in advance

Me: I didn’t know you owned dogs.

Them: They’re not my dogs, they’re my sisters.

Me: Well your sisters are adorable!

No

Update: I called back and was put on hold this time.

I waited on hold for 2 hours and 9 minutes, with standard hold music and the occasional message that told me to keep holding because my call would be answered in the order received)

And then the same recorded message as the first call was played, which said they couldn't get to my call at all and that I should try to call again later.

And then Rogers hung up on me. After 2 hours and 9 minutes of waiting on hold.

2 hours and 9 minutes.

My daughter was reading the latest Ed Zitron piece (link below) and as an accounting student she just HAD to make a few memes.

I am SO PROUD OF HER.

This wealth/wage/tax comparison meme has shown up in my feed on and off now every year or two for a decade and it just gets worse and worse

That’s a first: I called Rogers for tech assistance. After going through about three minutes of phone tree and account verification, a recording said they are experiencing such high call volume that they can’t help at all at this time, and I should try calling “later.”

No hold, no auto call back, no estimate, just: our customer service is so understaffed that on an ordinary Wednesday afternoon we can’t even predict when we can help you.

I thought that only happened during natural disasters. God forbid one happens.

I bet there’s no wait time to order a new phone. #Rogers
