To anyone following me who doesn't already know, the #Monsterdon movie watch-together of Critters 4 is about to begin. This should be my root thread assuming I have something to say about it (unless I lose power or something I'm going to have something to say about this one...) Mute this thread or mute me for an hour or so if you don't want to see posts about what I have very little doubt will amount to a very horrible movie (I hope in a good way?)

Ok, this is a dangerous question, but I still have to ask. For all you fellow #Linux users I'm looking to replace my console text editor. I am not and will not be an emacs user and I'm not a fan of vi/vim. I used nano, but really disliked it. I really enjoy tilde for the most part (though I do wish it didn't actually take over mouse selection to such an extent that I can't copy/paste from outside the terminal in a GUI) but tilde seems to be dead. The dev seems to be MIA and the packages no longer work. We can still manually build it (though it's not static and you can't move the source files after building or it quits working) but I assume eventually that's going to stop working.

Is there an editor kind of modernish like tilde but, you know, not dead and not emacs-based and a TUI?

I think I may have to miss this #Monsterdon and I truly hate it. I really want to see this one.

Is it on anything besides Tubi? I deleted Tubi due to certain very bad ads that will not be tolerated but it shows entirely too often. All this tracking and they can't take a hint that every time that commercial comes up I hit exit.

Wait, so the big bang was just some really bad fireworks and cheap explosion effects?

A lot of scientists are going to be very very disappointed...

I don't know if I'll have a lot to say about this particular #Monsterdon of Dr Who and the Daleks (1966) but just as a warning for those who follow me in case I do, mute the tag if you don't want to see a potential flood of comments incoming about it. (Or maybe not. If it's like the last one I think I won't have much to actually say.) I'll try to post my own comments solely in this thread (so you can mute just it if you don't mind a few responses showing up elsewhere.)

The problem is the initial ramdrive stuff seems to work differently with the Trixie-based RaspiOS. Creating a custom one via that method doesn't seem to work right anymore. That guide is really old (relatively speaking.)

I'm aware that sdm ( https://github.com/gitbls/sdm ) can automate setting up root encryption, but A. it's designed to run on an Ubuntu-based system (it may work on Debian, but I'm currently in CachyOS which is Arch-based) and B. I still really just want to encrypt /home not root. I can do something about A easily enough, but that won't fix B.

As far as I can tell the necessary modules go to the initramfs, but it's just not asking for a password...

So I have a strange question for the #Linux crowd — or more specifically, for the #RaspberryPi crowd. And possibly specifically #RaspberryPiOS (I'm not unwilling to consider others, but it is the most tested and has the tools for managing the RPi stuff.)

I would like to setup a configuration where the /home partition is encrypted with LUKS. I really would rather only /home for several reasons, including performance. Setting up the encryption is no real issue, but getting it to actually mount it on startup and prompt for the password (no I don't want a keyfile) is a problem. The normal initramfs stuff so easily setup on a desktop system seems to be really hard to get into a RPi distro and guides are way outdated. I can mount after boot, but not during.

This is a RPi4 (not 5.)

Question for #Linux users: I managed to cause filesystem damage on a 4TB drive during system stability testing after a few system failures while OCing. Whatever the actual filesystem damage is it is it's subtle though. At this time I can't rig up enough space to transfer all the data off of the drive and just reformat it like I'd love to do.

So far as I can tell, existing files all read without any problems. The weird issue is sometimes when writing new files, eventually it just sort of freezes up and then eventually produces an error until I unmount, remount (so it can run the journal back,) unmount again, then run xfs_repair on it (yes I'm using xfs.)

Until such time as I can get all the data off to reformat, is there anything I can do to actually fix this?

Watching this pre-movie on Miru's #Monsterdon stream and... they just... had no budget at all on this? Like you can SEE the wires on everything that flies, the rock doesn't fit the guitar case they got for it, the buildings explode before the asteroids hit them, etc etc...

(We also get the cabbage monster from before which was definitely not exactly a super expensive costume, lol.)

Hey @kde I want you to get all the donations you need to keep going and then some, but having popups on our desktops that effectively amount to ads is a gigantic no-no that could push people away for good instead. This was not a good idea and I STRONGLY urge you to remove this "feature" ASAP.

Yes even only once a year is still too often. No ads/etc should ever be a popup within the DE itself. That is never an acceptable practice. I think you underestimate people's well earned hatred of popups and ads. I assure you, they make us MAD.
