I'm out of spoons for today, and I have a lot to say about this another time, but I'm just going to leave this here, because it is unbelievably important.

The Trump quote screenshotted below, talking about his surprise at the lack of willing participants in his illegal war - “I think they’ll be involved maybe,” [Trump] said. “But they should be involved enthusiastically.” - made me physically shake with anger and frustration, and any number of triggers, and illustrates so so fucking clearly the intersection between the fashy narcissistic MAGA worldview, and misogyny, and the general culture which is being built around us. Like I say, I'm too tired to be eloquent about it right now, but am going to quote this excellent essay by Abi Awomosu - https://abiawomosu.substack.com/p/they-built-stepford-ai-and-called - the conclusion of which I vehemently disagreed with (I'm never gonna be persuaded to use ai) but was otherwise cheering every sentence:

"The Horror of Stepford

In Ira Levin’s 1972 novel—and the films that followed—the women of Stepford, Connecticut are replaced by robotic duplicates. The horror wasn't the replacement; sci-fi had been doing that for decades. The horror was far simpler and worse:

The robots want it.

The Stepford wives aren’t prisoners. They’re enthusiastic. They don’t resist—they smile. They don’t long for their former lives—they seem genuinely fulfilled by housework and sex and serving their husbands. The performance of happy subservience is so complete that it includes performing the desire to perform.

The husbands of Stepford didn’t just want obedience. They wanted wives who would authentically love being wives. Who would experience their servitude as fulfillment. Who would have no inconvenient interiority—no opinions, no refusals, no ambitions that might complicate the arrangement.

What made this horror rather than fantasy was the recognition. This is what we're already supposed to be.The robot wife was just the completion of what society already demanded."

And Trump is as usual screaming the quiet part at the top of his awful lungs, but in this case, it's about literally killing people.

They'll be involved maybe. But they should be involved enthusiastically.

Repulsive.

Came across such a marvellous phrase which has sadly fallen out of common use, but I think we should reinstate it forthwith: "it's all Lombard Street to a China orange", meaning very long odds for or against something - from London's Lombard Street, historically home to banks, as a metonym for all the money in England; and a China orange as something of trifling value.

Language is brill ❤️
