Was out visiting with family today and the subject turned to religion. I was straight-up asked: "what do you think about God?"
After a moment's pause, I could only reply with "my thoughts on the subject are... complicated", which was code for: "This is a subject I actively avoid here because it's not going to go well."
I've been through a faith deconstruction. It was a horrible experience, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
I'm sure everyone here has "the tech box": that box where you shove the miscelaneous cables and dongles and other crap that isn't currently being used but is too useful to just get rid of. In my case it had spilled over into multiple boxes and had just become a bit of a nightmare.
Anyhow, my parents were getting rid of this guy, so we took it home with us. Katy and I just spent the past hour meticulously going over every single item in our various tech boxes and cataloging them into a system inspired by the one described in @pluralistic's book, Makers.* It's not quite so elaborate as in the book. It's just an org-mode document that tells me exactly which drawer each item is in—no fancy RFID tags, but they're not items with a lot of churn either, so it's fine. Got to admit, it was rather satisfying to my probably #AuDHD brain.
Anyhow, I present to you the new gay tech organizer.
* That system has lived rent free in my head since I read the book like a decade an a half ago.
Edit: I make one little edit to fix a typo (okay two typos) and then need like three more edits to fix the formatting errors those introduced. I'm fired.
Just saw a YouTube video where a guy took some wood ash, water, and a bunch of other common ingredients and made soap with it. That's cool and all, but then he said it was "chemical free".
Setting aside my typical argument about how a "chemical free" product is objective nonsense... my dude, you literally just made lye, which is a pretty harsh chemical.
Turns out I've been pruning my #BorgBackup archives wrong. There's a second step involved that actually deletes the "removed" data rather than just (presumably) removing the refrences to that data from the index. While I knew about this second step, I assumed that it was like how it works when you delete a file: the data technically remains intact, but gets overwritten by subsequent writes. Apparently I was wrong about this. I've been pruning—but not compacting—my daily backups monthly for years.
Long story short: I just spent an entire day compacting my backups. My backup storage just went from 71% full to 38%.
I have noticed that a lot of verified accounts on gaza-verified.org—particularly those on mastodon dot social—have been muted or otherwise hidden hidden by their servers. As much as I would like to help, my resources are extremely constrained of late. Since I want to help, but am not in a position to contribute financially, I figured the least I could do was to try to provide some additional visibility.
If you have the means, and are so inclined, I would like to remind everyone that they can always find a random profile on gaza-verified.org/people/ and donate directly to someone who could really use the help.
Contrary to my usual policy, I'm not CWing this post, but I will use ample hashtags that anyone who choses to can opt to filter. Boosts welcome.
Dear #emacs,
This is very basic elisp. It should not be confusing your paren matching like this.
