i'm not totally sure i'd recommend tithe as vociferously as some of the others here. but it was incredibly targeted at teenage-me because it featured an escapist urban fantasy romance for a teenage girl from a lower-class family, written with the color of Someone Who Knows. holly black was really good at that with this series, wrote other stuff that i feel did NOT live up to to the promise of this particular ability, but has come back around for adults with book of night / thief of night

"No Man Is an Island" by Fernando Borretti https://borretti.me/article/no-man-is-an-island

I feel a lot of this to be sure. I think many of us may be running on the fumes of motivation from a previous era.

@maya made http://romanti.me not broken (and much nicer looking / more accurate and informative) 🙏

One of the very first lessons in Linguistics 101 is that descriptivism is our goal (studying how people talk, not how they should) and prescriptivism is bad (a kind of oppression/discrimination), but the work of Kirby Conrod and others has helped me understand that some intentional language change is important and beneficial.

okay final review: not worthwhile. if you're interested in, like, victorian social history, you already know more than this has. if you're not, it doesn't have enough depth or analysis to make you interested.

"Maybe the Victorian elites also had advantages relative to elites today. One strength of all Gemeinschaften is that they can reward their members with prestige rather than money, which is useful in contexts where adequate financial rewards are for some reason impossible."

you mean... like some kind of.... 'psychological wage'...... how could we perhaps come up with an example of this fulfilling a bad role in a society....

reading further.... seems way too hand-wavily "[here are my general feelings about various aspects of this stuff]"

like i kind of think this would be better framed without the "[and look how massively stompy the british empire managed to be!! so it must have worked]" angle

https://worksinprogress.co/issue/the-seven-vices-of-highly-effective-victorians/

i want to read this because this kind of takey historical writing is fun for me but the whole "[Some people think the power of the empire came from the bajillions they exploited. Probably at least a little. Moving on: what if the success came from the elites' squishiness and not despite it?]" intro is ... uh...

i was rejected by Game Development Harvard even after attending a game development preparatory school, so there was simply no way to otherwise acquire technical experience or game engine knowledge

> But game creation has historically been limited to a select group of people who have technical experience and knowledge of complex game engines.
