So, our XC40 Volvo EV's app out of the blue announced that the car had gone off-line and it couldn't communicate with it. Nothing in the manual to tell me how to go back on-line, so I go to Volvo's help chat. Long story short, it seems that after a software update you need to re-start the mobile radio modem by pressing the 'defrosting' button - to the right of the red emergency triangle button - and looking at the same time at the SOS button overhead to see if its LED starts blinking. If it does, the car is back on-line - or will be after a re-boot... lovely user interface 🤪

Yes, I loved the movie too, in spite of its rather improbable plot line. This was in 1972, the age of the O'Neill space habitat study. The High Frontier was in 1976, and I devoured it...what has happened to our imagination, that the most spectacular thing we do in space RN is destroying the dark night sky for the sake of accessing Fakebook from the middle of nowhere?

I needed to flip JPEG figures horizontally, and I have done so in the past - inside the GIMP, which is quite the overkill. So I searched the Interwebs, and lo and behold:

convert -flip infile.jpeg outfile.jpeg

-flop gives vertical flip.

This is so Unix it gives me a tooth ache.

epsteinwiki.com is an interesting site. Looks professionally done and a good idea. And ambitious. But, no matter how much I tried, I was unable to find out who is behind it. For all I know, a guy in a basement...

The thing closest to a founder's name that I found is @ResistanceKitty . It again links to an operation called Revolution 2025. It has an anarchist / anti-fascist / community resistance feel to it. Nothing wrong with that.

Youtube is now publishing deepfake videos 'by' well known people like Rachel Maddow and Rick Wilson. The text is spoken by their synthetised talking heads.

The scripts of the videos are not misleading as such - only as to the identity of the claimed speaker. But that is bad enough. What is especially bad is that there is no clear marking that these are deepfakes. In a just world, there would be a glaring colour background, like when you go to private mode in Firefox. Ugh.

@Teri_Kanefield Using the terms 'anger' and 'division' in this way is itself a form of 'departisanwashing'. Yes there is anger, but on one side it is anger against innocent groups of people that have been demonized, and against politicians on the other side for imaginary sins. On the other side, anger at the targeting of these innocent people, and at the lying and corruption and abuse of power. Those two are not the same.
