Bloody scary. Bloody magnificent!

@sturobson made tidy-typography.css: a style reset for taming typography with modern CSS features for everything from fluid typography and vertical rhythm, to hyphens and variable fonts.

He explains his incredibly thoughtful choices in this article. I hope I get to use this in a real project!

Godzilla time! Resisted the urge to spend £30 on a popcorn bucket.

Meet Wheelman. The client I use to show how websites can stand out. It’s a fictional client, but the creative challenges and design decisions involved are very, very real.

In 20 years, I’ve had a Book G4, one MacBook Air, and five MacBook Pro laptops.

Ordered myself a new MacBook Pro. Incredible to think this is probably going to be the last Mac I buy before I retire. Welp.

One word.

Web design today is more polished than ever, but with all that polishing, we’ve smoothed out a lot of personality. I call it “commodity design.”

📚It’s vital that we all support independent writers and publishers as often and as much as we can. So check out Chris’ book on accessibility.

📙 If you like going behind the scenes, I wrote about “Designing the pages of Standout Designs for the Web.” This time, I’ve taken on every aspect of design and production. Here’s how I created the layouts, grids, and visual language for my new book.

📙I wrote a new book!

It’s called “Standout Designs for the Web” and I wrote it because too many websites look the same, and I want to show how to make them stand out.

Pre-orders start 12 Nov.

CSS Tricks is back with a new owner. My pal Geoff is taking a huge gamble in taking ownership of the site because he believes in education and our industry. At the very least, show your support by subscribing to the newsletter. https://css-tricks.com/newsletters/

Yikes! I was only there a few weeks ago. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/24/blaze-engulfs-hitlers-eagles-nest-mountain-retreat-in-bavaria

Back in the earlies, CSS lovers invented new stuff, shared eagerly, and challenged each other to improve on it. There was real excitement when someone launched a site. Others would dig into the code to learn and make suggestions. We celebrated each others work. I miss that. I really miss that.

I ‘was’ going to go out to buy paint. But SOD THAT!

Last week in the studio (CW42-26)

Last week, I continued developing Moonwalk Audio’s new website. There’s still plenty to do, but the most extravagant animation I’ve created so far is taking shape.

Working on marketing material for my new book, but I got distracted.
