This is what having no systemd in your system is like, when the system is idle — it's 99% idle.

Yep, I don't have a "modern browser" running, but the machine isn't a 56-core monster either, it's a Pentium-M machine from 20 years ago! But I can still have XMPP and Matrix chats using profanity and gomuks, browse Fedi, Gemini using Lagrange or amfora, read RSS feeds in newsraft, listen to music and watch HD videos with mpv and even browse some web using Netsurf or chawan — and I still have plenty of RAM left, like back in the day when this ThinkPad T43 was brand new. Except it's 2026 and OpenBSD 7.9 is still supported on this machine!

GCC 14.2 was released in August 2024, I'm not living in your fast lane guys!

I'd expect something like this in Rust space, but Perl? Are you for real?!

OMG, Gajim 2.x for Windows is unusable! And mainly because of GTK4 — it doesn't respect system scaling and its own setting only goes up to 1.5x — everything is tiny! I can partially work this around with font setting in theming options, it works for chat logs, but not the contact list and other UI elements.
But what's even worse, GTK4 doesn't support Windows' rudimentary "tiling" window management features — it doesn't stick to screen edges, at all! You have to resize the window manually like in the old days.
I'm not making this up: https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/issues/12348
And corresponding GTK feature merge request is from 2021 (!): https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/merge_requests/4252

Oh, and there is no main application menu — no button for it and no keyboard shortcut to make it visible, it's just gone! How do I browse services? How do I do anything at all, for which the main window has no button?
If I wasn't aware that 1.9.5 exists, I'd consider this port an early beta.

Losing to Qt as cross-platform UI toolkit makes sense like never before — even the few applications still relying on it, become impossible to use on switching to newer GTK version 😩

So, this is what I wake up to…

Okay, hello, #cat ! 😸

This demonstrates quite well why low-effort image codecs are dead on arrival. And the explanation is quite simple — these aren't really image codecs, they were never designed to be that! These are video codecs applied to static images disguised as brand new image codecs: #WebP is VP9, HEIF is HEVC also known as H.265 and AVIF is AV1.
And indeed, for video even 8193x4320 leaves some headroom — not for photos, given how having a high-resolution camera system became a major selling point of high-end smartphones, even 16383x16383 might seem lacking tomorrow.

Or course this can be worked around as to a degree all of these are extensible, e.g. AVIF has advanced profile: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVIF#Profiles
According to Wikipedia:

Coded image items compliant to the AVIF Advanced profile may not have a total number of pixels greater than 35,651,584, a width greater than 16,384, or a height greater than 8,704. It is still possible to use the Advanced profile to create larger images using grid derivation.

Problem is — your existing software and even hardware might not support this advanced profile. WebPee has already already been extended to have the features listed in the table — and it is still severely limited.
So why bother supporting all this bestiary of formats, which are essentially gimmicks and not go all in with true image codec that has all the advantages and features and none of the limitations?
Hm-m-m… Indeed, why? 😏

#JPEG-XL

0 days have passed since Brotli 1.2.0 release — it got released TODAY and apparently some distros go into the trouble of packaging GoogleShit™ as soon as it arrives!

I'm in despair! The level of infiltration by GoogleShit™ has left me in despair! 😱

Hosting a normal Fediverse instance: sorry, we had a downtime of 15 minutes (someone unplugged the server in my basement) 🥺

Hosting a single-user instance: why don't I upgrade PostgreSQL in a live system? 😈

Walls of text do look better with "text-align: justify" — shorter posts sometimes don't, but I suppose you can't have both, we aren't here for 2-3 line posts are we? Walls of text remain a priority 😈

Mozilla #Thunderbird is cool software!

Unfortunately it doesn't work… 😩

So, I have Radicale and I want Thunderbird to synchronise contacts and calendars with it. There used to be this add-on/extension that could do the job just fine: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/dav-4-tbsync/
Why "used to"? Because now Thunderbird supposedly supports CalDAV/CardDAV natively and the only thing the latest version of that extension does is suggests you to use built-in features and offers removing itself.
Why only "supposedly" — because built-in support for #CalDAV and CardDAV does NOT work. Okay, CardDAV works to some extent — CalDAV doesn't work at all! When I attempt to point it to my calendar it doesn't even prompt me for a password. Could it be because CardDAV is already configured for the same server and it has my password? No! Because it's my server and I can see the server logs — it does not even attempt to log in. Okay, so I put the login name and password right in the URL — I can see the server reply with 200, so it should be okay? No! It's still "Please wait while your calendars are being discovered" and the spinner keeps spinning infinitely.

No, my Thunderbird profile isn't borked either — I tried starting from a clean slate, still doesn't work.
I tried looking for bugs related to this matter — nothing. People are only reporting problems connecting their iCloud calendars — and unlike with my non-idiosyncratic CalDAV server, these issues do get fixed, although I doubt there are lots of people who need this as those who rely on iCloud are likely to use Apple Mail and iCal.

Okay, built-in thing doesn't work and the latest version is just a stub, but we have older versions of the extension archived on its page, right? Yes, we do! But it doesn't work with Thunderbird 128 (current ESR version) and above.

So sadly, the solution to my problem was building the old ESR version — 115, same as with Firefox. I suppose with Mozilla's software everything above 115 is broken in one way or the other and we have reached the point when you care less and less about security because in newer versions they keep removing the features you use — some of the features can be considered "core" features to this type of software.
So, what exactly is Thunderbird today — a clunky email client? Half-assed RSS reader? A PIM you can only use locally (or with iCloud)? 😕

Kotorday! 😼😸

Damn, building LLVM 19 involves over 12 thousands (!) of operations — at least this is how cmake displays its progress. I think I remember it being in 10 thousand ballpark. And although they've already started throwing things out — like support for 3D Now! instruction set, the project is growing fast!

I wonder when it caves in under all this complexity 😈

Should Android OS be occupying this much RAM, could it be leaking somehow? 🤔
I haven't restarted this thing in over six months and I probably should at some point, as it started closing mobile Firefox more often than it used to as if it's short on RAM.

New coronavirus dropped? 😅

New coronavirus discovered in China ‘only small step’ from infecting humans: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/covid-virus-china-pandemic-hku5-b2765419.html

OMG, there are Ray Ban glasses made in collaboration with Facebook? 🤯

Not a fan of unprovoked violence towards strangers, but I hope their owners get hit in their faces REAL often 😈

Damn, I really like #snac2 so far!
Its footprint is tiny — just a few megabytes, when idle, it uses like 0.3% CPU and 0.5% RAM on this old PowerPC G4 Mac Mini with only a gigabyte of RAM.
And almost no disk IO too! Especially compared to PostgreSQL, which Pleroma uses.
Right now it's running next to Pleroma, but while Pleroma gets overwhelmed and is on the verge of dying all the time — snac2 stands its ground like that Doom Slayer against the armies of Hell 😈

At the time it's an unfair comparison as my old instance is two years old and its discovery is way wider, dozens of instances chime in every minute. I have subscribed to relays with snac2 and so far it fares very well.
