I wish Time Machine sparse bundles stored data and metadata separately. I can't afford to back up to SSD, but having everything on a networked HDD array is agonizingly slow...
I store my *NAS* meta itself on SSDs. If the sparsbundle had meta separately, I could just move that...
Notes on restoring a network Time Machine backup to a new/wiped Mac via USB:
- Place the .sparsebundle at the *root* of the USB filesystem, or it won't find it
- Recovery mode does not work, boot normally and use Migration Assistant (on firstboot flow)
- If correct, USB drive will pop up in backup source list

Sooo I wrote two NekoDeck services, one to receive video notifications from YouTube, and one to pull the details and send events like "stream-scheduled/started/stopped"...

If you search the question, the AI overview is wrong. nits are a unit of brightness per area, so first of all, you need to multiply by screen area (in square meters).
1 nit = 3.426 lm/m2 (?)
But where does that constant come from anyway? If you search around, you will find various websites using that number. Others say it is just 1.
Apparently the 3.426 factor has to do with conversion from foot-lamberts... so completely unrelated.
1 nit = 1 cd/m2. 1 cd = 1 lm/sr. So 1 nit = 1 lm/sr⋅m2. For a perfectly uniform Lambertian surface, the integral over 180 degrees (the screen only emits forward) works out to π (3.14). So 3.426 is impossibly large.
But of course, real screens aren't uniform emitters. For OLED screens it would be a fairly small factor, since they tend to maintain brightness at steeper angles. LCD screens have much stronger falloff, which depends on the specific technology.
You'd have to integrate the brightness curve for a specific display to arrive at a number. Eyeballing and extrapolating the graphs in the previous link and plugging into Wolfram Alpha, I get around a factor of 2.9 for OLED and 2.2 for IPS, give or take. Probably a lot worse for TN. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, but that's the ballpark.
So, for a screen, lumens = k * nits * area (m2 ), where k is in the ballpark of 2.9 for OLED, 2.2 for IPS, and pi ideal.

In case you're wondering, they find out about new web servers / TLS certificates from public Certificate Transparency logs.
I created a new TLS cert for a subdomain for internal use. 10 minutes later Claude scraped the server. 7 minutes after that ChatGPT scraped it.
They're REALLY thirsty aren't they... only two random bots trying to steal credentials/auto-hack scanned it before them. Google/Grok didn't bother at all.
Then of the dozens of malicious scans I got in the first 24h, the worst one (over half the request log for that day just from one IP trying to steal credentials) came from a Google Cloud IP...
Everything seems to be either:
- For breadboards. Breadboards don't have a spatial/intuitive layout.
- Just a pile of stuff in one big PCB with a fixed layout
- Too dumbed down, few gates with bright colors for really young kids
- Arduino/whatever/not logic
I had a kit that had transistors, resistors, capacitors, and logic blocks that would snap onto a carrier board (in whatever layout you want), and then wire up with flying wires. You could add your own parts too (bare resistors etc).
There was a 2 digit LCD counter module too.
I think it was like... French or something? But obviously it doesn't exist any more.
I kind of really want to design a modern version of this now and I think I have a plan...
After last night's stream I think I want to do a handcam stream teaching digital logic with real logic gates... and I realized that good digital logic demo/learning kits just don't seem to exist any more. Nothing like what I had when I was young.
