HTML is one of the more difficult languages, while JS is probably one of the easiest.

HTML has both a low barrier to entry and a surprising amount of depth. it's almost deceptively simple on the surface. but to make best use of HTML, you have to* understand how it translates to DOM and the accessibility tree.

*well, you don't _have_ to, but it certainly helps if it's your profession. so many web developers get by without ever learning the difference between attributes and properties.

Purity tests undermine solidarity. Work together on the things you agree on. Debate, disagree, and educate — in good faith — on the things you don’t.

When we spend energy infighting, we don’t have the energy to fight the powerful / status quo for the policies & laws that make real change.

Here's my hot take:

Web components are bad at doing the things libraries like React shouldn't and needn't be doing.

Converting #CSS to use BEM syntax is a lossy transformation

@iamdavidobrien None of the other browsers support switch inputs yet. But they will. It’s now part of HTML.

Also, because of how the HTML is designed, if you use `<input type="checkbox" switch>` on a webpage, it will just appear as a checkbox in browsers that don’t have support. Nothing will be broken. Fallbacks FTW!

Instead of my daughter's name, I'll get this sentence from the HTML spec tattooed on my forearm:

“Authors are strongly encouraged to view the div element as an element of last resort, for when no other element is suitable. Use of more appropriate elements instead of the div element leads to better accessibility for readers and easier maintainability for authors.”

I feel this piece deep in my bones. If you are a PM, designer, or developer building stuff for the web, you owe it to yourself to give it a read.

Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.

It’ll be great to see GivennameFamilyname@mastodon.famousnewspaper.com or whatever domain they want to use.

Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.

Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.
