genuinely i think fucking around with config.sys and the extended memory driver shit on DOS used to be quicker than this. and it didn't involve a QR code. i guess maybe the game asked you to turn to a specific page of the manual and input the 9th word or something
every time i want to play a video game on one of these new devices which supposedly makes it much easier and more convenient to play a video game than the old "put the game in" era of console gaming, i spend an hour trying to sign in, work out which of our accounts the cloud save is on, why isnt the controller working, bluetooth pairing the controller, figuring out the controller mapping because xbox and nintendo cant agree on the buttons, downloading system updates, downloading game updates,
its terrible if someone could hack into your bank account. but you know whats worse? if someone else can play your computer games without paying for their own copy. that would be just really awful. it must be prevented at all costs
switching accounts on the steam deck. signing into my account. sign in using the Steam Mobile App to sign in via QR code. open the mobile app. mobile app: "you have been signed out. to sign into the steam mobile app authenticator, please enter the code from your steam mobile app authenticator"

After shaving off my hair I've been getting this strange urge to headbutt other balds I see on the metro
the technology really doesn't matter so much as the fact that it has exposed a difference in values between people. it has created multiple incompatible worlds, which were possibly always there, but only in theory. it has made those hypotheticals into real choices. it's forced us to all sit down and actually choose. except it's not a free choice, it's not a consumer choice like which toothpaste to buy. it's a choice like "do i avenge my father by killing the man who killed him" kind of choice
problem with AI discourse is we're trying to use a technical conversation, where we analyse the development and operation of a technology, to discuss people. the real topic is the people: the people that make or use 'AI'. we're trying to understand them. we didn't realize there were people like this. but now we've discovered that there are, so we're trying to figure it out. via debate and insult, we're trying to work out what the fuck is going on with these people. not the technology, the people
in the old days youd blend 2 or 3 textures to create some kinda water effect. but theres no point anymore doing that kind of shit. these days its got really stupid. you can do some whole water calculation, physics simulation, simulate the entire history of earth, all civilisations rising and falling, individual rain droplets that contributed to the water's surface, and then rasterise it all into pixels, meanwhile those 3 texture fetches are still waiting to finish
there's something similar with video games. the good video games are about someone noticing something structural or behavioral about the real world they find fascinating or fun, and trying to distill its essence into an interactive model for players. the bad video games are made by people who are trying to make video games just like the video games they've already played, because they've no experience of the richness of the world other than others' predigested models of it
when people were accustomed to office stationery or drafting tables or the shop floor, computer interfaces used those symbols to explain behaviors. now the tools that everybody uses every day just look like nothing. just a rectangle with a screen on it. phones and computers and various shapes of abstract featureless glossy rectangle. sometimes in different colors. nobody's seen anything else. so it's no surprise that all our UIs just look like a series of abstract featureless glossy rectangles
i remember a lot of discourse which probably started in the 80s and 90s about how graphical computing was going to open this whole new logographic era of design, a spatial interactive era, where our tool-using, mud-pie-making, physics-simulating animal brains would be able to frolic in a virtual workshop of multimedia affordances and widgets. 30 years later, everything is Nothing, identical monochrome icons, text on abstract shapes representing Nothing, animating for no reason, conveying Nothing
computers have replaced so many physical tools that now we can't even design skeuomorphic interfaces properly anymore, because the youngest generation aren't familiar with any of the objects the visual analogies are supposed to suggest
im not a heating technician but the boiler is probably about 15 years old which means it was manufactured around the peak of dubstep popularity
our boiler has started making this extremely loud sound lately which is pretty epic of it
