Still very much a beginner, but b&w photography is a super fun way to just focus on the fundamentals.

The Oxford Internet Institute has published a video of the talk that @pluralistic and Professor Tim Wu did the other night:

Professor Tim Wu and @pluralistic's talk in Oxford tonight was definitely interesting.
Coming from the hacker world and _not_ the academic world, it was a bit of a different vibe from other talks on this sort of topic that I've attended, but it was definitely interesting hearing from the other attendees.
In fact, as someone who's already very familiar with Cory and his work, it was almost _more_ interesting to talk to the academic folks about their experiences, perspectives, and thoughts on the talk.
Another day, another little language learning tool.
Kanji Dojo Buddy is an Anki plugin that lets you analyze your Anki cards for Japanese characters—hiragana, katakana, and kanji—and add them into your Kanji Dojo backup file.
Your mature Anki cards will be sorted in order of maturity and each unique character added to Kanji Dojo in that order. This means that, as long as you turn shuffle off in Kanji Dojo, you can practice writing characters that you are most familiar with first, making it easier to match your writing practice to your Anki vocab and sentence reviews.

Does anyone know of any hackerspace/makerspace fediverse instances? Extra points if it's UK-based?
We'd like to set up a fediverse account for the Oxford space but not currently in a position to maintain a whole instance.
(Please boost for reach if you can.)
Important tip for #Linux users.
Always make sure you install the `cowsay` package and add this to your .bashrc:
cat() { command cat "$@" | cowsay }
It may be a _discontinued_ Hirose connector? Still not certain, though, and no new leads yet.
Their current line appears to have only one series of round connectors with the only arrangement of pins being 2-3-4-3-2.
Please boost/share with other connector nerds to get more eyes on this!
I'm trying to identify this 14-pin round connector. It's a keyed connector with the pins in a 4-4-4-2 arrangement. The only markings on the connector are HRS, so I believe it's a Hirose connector.
It's found on a Roland PNC-2500 Milling machine, so this connector must have been produced around 1995 and available in Japan.
EDIT:
The legendary @otohime has IDd it!
It's from the Hirose RP5 series: https://zirk.us/@otohime/112593637566911605
I highly recommend putting aside the time to watch the entirety of @pluralistic 's DEF CON 31 talk.

Hey @deviantollam—or anyone else with knowledge on physical security—is there a practical reason to have a lock which can throw three bolts in sequence?
It uses a dimple key and when you turn the key one full rotation the three bolts will throw approximately 1/3rd of the way.
You can take the key out between each turn, so you can leave the bolts in a 1/3 extended state.
There's another thumbturn lock above it which basically does the same thing, meaning you can have 6 bolts all engaged at once.
Apparently some folks have been trolling AI bots scraping subreddits and it resulted in this amazing article about the introduction of "Glorbo" to World of Warcraft.
Now I really want to add Glorbo to my WoW server. 😂

Why am I just now learning about Flashpoint Archive?
This amazing gaming preservation effort has kept thousands of flash games and animations alive!
For those of us who were around for that era we can relive our favourites and for the next generations they can experience all the weird and wacky content for the first time!

Does anyone on the fediverse know enough #Armenian to translate this page from my family bible?
Also, any religious scholars who might be able to tell me about what's on these pages?
Boosts very welcome so I can reach people in #Scholar and #Codicology circles.
The emotional rollercoaster of a voicemail coming in on your emergency work line on a Friday ten minutes before you're supposed to be off … then finding out it's a spam robocall.
I'm using the heat here in England as an excuse to stay inside as much as possible.
;p
If this turns out to be real I think it'll have even further negative impacts on the IPO and that'll deepen the dilemma that reddit ownership is currently navigating so poorly.

Anyone else here have any experience running #snac as a simple, lightweight #ActivityPub option?
I'm interested in some real-world experiences from people who have been using it.
Sure, getting a corrupt image/ISO download isn't a common issue—it's only happened to me a handful of times—but it's such an annoying-to-debug issue that I _always_ do a sha265sum check when possible these days.
Does anyone else actually download and check sha256 checksums when flashing ISOs?
