So, I've been slowly working on moving ttw to NetBSD -- Redis and PostgreSQL done, and I have a working OpenSearch using OpenJDK to replace Elasticsearch.

Today's update does make me think twice though: In this case I benefit from new code in Mastodon _but also_ the upgrade of dependencies and Ruby in the included Docker container.

On raw NetBSD I'm on my own for updating this stuff / at the mercy of pkgsrc.

pkgsrc does have the new Ruby, but I'd be building it from source, I think.

Went out for lunch with colleagues and had my favourite slice at Pizza Nerds. My director paid for us and then at the end our server said the kitchen had messed up a donair pizza, aesthetically, but it was perfectly edible and did any of us want it?

So I had my favourite for dinner too. Definitely an all-timer day.

(Then I broke something minor in production at the pizza software company that I work at).

I often think about the bookmarking service, Pinboard.

Until December 2010 it was an also-ran Delicious. Delicious was a much more popular bookmarking service run by Yahoo!

Delicious was free and Pinboard cost money.

And then news got out that Yahoo was going to sunset it.

Sometimes you can compete (and win) by _still being there_ when your biggest competitor alienates their entire user base.

People are scared of hosting their own email because they won't be able to deliver to GMail: so they host with GMail.

Colocataires had the option of an 18 month wait or applying under a (one time) special provision just to get a /24 network -- table stakes for just _being on the Internet as an ISP_.

And we buy bandwidth by the gigabit and that's how we supply it to our customers. People are routinely surprised that there is just ... no cost for transfer, something which was standard practice.

I think it could form part of a "getting radicalized against big cloud providers" story arc, which could include topics like "who created the deliverability problem and will sell you a fix" (cloud providers), "who gets almost all of the new IPv4 allocations returned to registries?" (it's cloud providers) and "why did we normalize the move back to billing for transfer instead of bandwidth, just when costs were falling?" (guess who).

I think the key insight of "hyperscalers want software to cost nothing because you still need servers to run it" was eye-opening.

I've also been thinking about Kubernetes as a (bad) version of GIFEE, and how that's also been bad for software companies.

I am never this careless and have never broken a laptop this way. My family are not, so I have experience with these repairs but I am very angry at myself for letting this happen.
