I don't really like writing about politics much because everything I have to say seems very "Socialism 101" to me. I have a Framework a few years now and I'm disappointed in them, but I didn't want to just summarise the situation because 1) plenty of people have done that, and 2) it is an opportunity to talk about a more fundamental problem.

Some reflections on what tech companies actually value, with reference to Framework’s recent sponsorship choices, but really more generally than that.

Added a couple more levels to the shadow dither. It's a bit basic as far as a dither goes, but not sure if anything fancier will work.

Took aaaages to do this because it turned out the previous one was only working by accident; as soon as I tried using a larger dither texture it fell over :try_not_to_cry:

I might try to take the shade colours from a palette rather than just overlaying black, with or without the dithering.

If you watch from Rogue One straight into A New Hope, it's weird because Leia's ship pops out of a larger ship and escapes, and then the droids pop out of her ship and escape. They should have had R2D2 get captured and then had a smaller droid pop out of him and run away across the desert.

Maybe in the 50th anniversary remaster.

Generative AI is another in a long line of addictive technologies that the tech industry has produced due to the perverse incentives of capitalism - loot boxes in videogames, algorithmic social media feeds, recommendation algorithms in online shopping and streaming, etc. That's on top of being, as @emilymbender put it, "the equivalent of an oil spill in our information ecosystem", and a force for the devaluation of creative labour.

Here we can see that the AI produced an "idea" that the author didn't understand, but he still felt ok including, albeit with his own commentary.

But also he makes a very insightful connection between AI use and gambling at the beginning - the results being close to what you want but not quite right incentivises you to keep prompting, hoping that the next time will be the one, the big payout.

The author seems to be hopelessly addicted. He even used AI to help write the article, which of course raises the question of how much of Fred is even in there? Did he even have this realisation, or did the AI spit it out?

I found this article about AI assisted coding pretty funny for how insanely convoluted it made the process sound, and the extent to which it anthropomorphised the AI ("force the model to think through the architecture" etc.)
