I believe I have discovered a new fundamental universal force: that between Bolognese sauce and Child B's elbows.

Every way B turns, leans or reaches at the table, their elbow lands in, or drags through, some Bolognese sauce.

Now I need to apply for some funding to investigate further. At the same time I could see if more or less Bolognese sauce lands on B's pullover if the Bolognese is on a spoon, or being fired by a particle accelerator.

Child A's latest three books have arrived. At the rate they're going at this will last about a week.

I'm amazed by their reading speed. This year already they've read all (7!) Mortal Engines books. Luckily they seem open to #Discworld and they've already read the first two Tiffany Aching books (the second one currently being re-read).

I already own all the 'grown up' Discworld books they can graduate into. Also this way I can read the Tiffany Aching books, as the only one I've read so far is Wee Free Men.

We do get a lot of books from the library, but it's often hard to get the exact next book you need in a series.

Sometimes I'm overwhelmed by simple choices, and I read too much meaning into them; like choosing toilet cleaner. Am I:

• Own brand (cheap, but small),
• Toilet Duck (expensive),
• Domestos (mid range value)?

but then how should my toilet smell?

• Floral Blossom,
• Citrus Burst,
• Ocean Fresh?

And what kind of person would that make me?

Good news, my new firewall rule to block aggressive bots mostly works as hoped when testing it from home.

Today's #1001albums is My Generation by The Who, and I feel this is a classic example of something that at the time was considered radical (so much distorted guitar, in 1965!) and now feels like pretty standard indie rock.

It's not bad, but it also doesn't seem that amazing, I suspect because I'm used to everything that came later and copied it, and so can't experience how new it sounded at the time.

I have a #firewall question that perhaps #AskFedi can help with please: Is it worth pre-calculating a whitelist by removing black listed items from it first, and if so, what tool do you use to do that?

More specifically: I have a geoIP based whitelist for some countries. I also have a global blacklist. I was thinking it might be easier to create one allow list, that removes the IPs (v4, v6, and ranges in CIDR notation) that appear in the blacklist from the geoIP list. I'm running #pf on #FreeBSD if that makes a difference. Or should I just load both into the firewall as pass and block respectively, and let it calculate if the IP is allowed to connect?

I tried using grepcidr to do this calculation, but it doesn't seem to do the set maths I was hoping it would do. But I'm not even sure it's worth bothering.

Apparently after updating drivers I cannot reboot my Windows computer because the application that updated the drivers and wants to reboot the computer now is running and I have to wait for it to finish rebooting my computer (which it's decidedly not doing) before I can reboot my computer.

The present participle of updating a #YAML file while complaining about doing so¹ is "yamling".

E.g. "Yesterday Alex was yamling about the configs because they changed the API, again."

I've been blocked for months, trying to figure out a tone and framing that I feel good about sharing publicly. To be honest I'm kinda proud of this one, but even if nobody cares it feels so good to just get these thoughts out of my head.

Today's #WTF moment is brought to you by trying to figure out why 404 pages in my #homeLab coming via a reverse proxy were all mangled and weird. I've tried every combination of gzip on and off, headers, encoding on the #nginx proxy and backend.

Then I check the actual 404.html page. I have no idea how that happened.
