I think I have all but proven to myself that the "hardass/quality over everything/call people out when they don't meet personal rigor bar/shame people" mentality does not work at all in actually achieving rigor.

It's a really hard belief to shake, that I have been working on shaking since high school.

I have had so many examples now that it just leads to drama, animosity and inflated egos, while the actual work is about the same quality as if people weren't constantly put on the spot, in most ways, with one big difference: it doesn't keep improving in quality over time.

Good work environments have no ceiling in quality. A team can start at the absolute bottom producing complete garbage and grow in quality together to produce world class stuff. It's all about physiological safety and space to learn.

You don't need to do anything but do good work and incentive learning. Eventually everyone will do better work than you and you will then strive to meet their bar - without ever being called out.

I will still bitch about the quality bar not being met to my SO & frens till I die tho :blobfoxlaugh:

I think my waking up to higher level mathematical thinking was when I was reading the C book and I was like, wait a second, defining a static array IS the same as defining a function, but with a different syntax.
