@colinchick @elaterite @nazgul Lovely!

ICYMI, PJ Harvey released a song about Voyager earlier this year in a similar vein: https://youtu.be/XzCjzFsGl_c

oh, i almost forgot Nigel's Volkswagen Beetle penjing. he has a Youtube series from a few years back where he showed the process of distressing the model bug, to make it look abandoned. the planting has progressed nicely in the intervening years.

Winter in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains above Santa Fe, New Mexico. Snow blankets the trail, frost coats every branch, and the evergreens are dressed in white.

I'm hoping the winter ahead brings us more beautiful scenes like this. With El Niño developing, there's hope for some much-needed moisture and plenty of mountain snow!

@elaterite back in the early nineties I whimsically pondered out loud to my sister, "I wonder if Voyager sings out there to relieve the boredom?"
A few days later she ran with my question and wrote a poem:

Voyager

Alone in the vast velvet

Emptiness,

The brightest light is

Fading,

Communication

Hesitates,

And the only link to home

Is a vacuum.

You carry our

Curiosity

On a journey longer than our

Dreams;

The loneliest piece of

Earth-dust,

Racing patiently into the

Void;

And we wonder:

Do you sing to yourself?

@ambivalena Are you getting any Northern Lights? It looks like it should be very active right now and in the coming days. I hope it's clear for you!

Tuesday evening at Blue Lake in the North Cascades.

The sky turned a beautiful pink and lavender, and the golden larches really stood out against the rocky spires of the Liberty Bell Group.

It was a beautiful way to end the day in the mountains. 🍂 🏔️

Ha ha, welp, it's raining again in Aztec. I guess I'm catching up on not experiencing rain for 39 years while living in Reno. (I exaggerate, but only a little.) The best part is I can hear it on the roof of my trailer! My old house had a concrete tile roof and I don't think you could hear a plane landing on it let alone the few rare Reno raindrops. ☔

Ya, I have an old bread machine in storage. It's much better than store bought, but not nearly as good a rustic sourdough loaf.

Recommendations sought:

Since my trailer doesn't have an oven that works well--it took me an hour to roast three chiles the other day--I need a air fryer or convention oven so I can bake & broil. Baking bread would be a primary use.

There are so many choices it's overwhelming what to buy or what features I need.

I'm a basic hands-on type guy: I'm not interested in anything with AI, apps, &c. Mechanical switches & t-stat would be ideal, but an electronic keypad is okay too.

Next month Voyager 1, launched 49yrs ago on 5 Sept 1977, will be one light-day from Earth. That's 26 billion kilometers (16 billion miles) from home! That means when Mission Control sends a message, "Hey Voyager 1, what's up?" Two days later the reply, "Not much, just cold and dark out here," will be received. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 149.6 million km which = one astronomical unit (AU). Voyager 1 is ~174AU from Earth.

The two parallel lines of dark grey-green greywacke sandstone bricks are a unique feature at Aztec Ruins National Monument.* Originally, the wall would have had an outer layer of adobe so the greywacke bricks would not have been visible when the living occupied the site.

*The site is not ethnic Aztec & local Natives prefer the term structures over ruins.

And whilst the seestars were spotting nebulae, the RedCat was staring at galaxies for a few hours.

This is a part of the Fornax cluster. Its most famous member is the barred spiral of NGC1365, just left of center.

Not too far away in the sky, but all the way over at bottom right here, sits Fornax A, a giant elliptical galaxy with visible shells of stars around it. The shells of stars mean that it has interacted with and probably eaten other galaxies.

The name means it is the most radio-bright thing in Fornax, so it probably has a supermassive black hole at its center that is actively munching things.

Also note the little galaxy at middle right, that looks like it has a ring around it. That is generally a sign of a direct hit by another galaxy.

The densest part of the cluster sits towards the top left. There is much more to it, but my camera sensor is too small to catch it all at this focal length :-)

120 x 60 seconds with a RedCat 61, UV/IR cut filter and ASI294MC Pro camera on an AM5. Stacked and processed in siril, with rc-astro tools.

It was a really pretty day so I walked over to the park to take a couple of wide-angle photos. Because of all the rain we've received in recent weeks, everything is turning green...like it were spring. 🫤 (But then maybe this is normal here?) It will be fun to keep checking in on this scene when the leaves fully turn and when we get a little snow!
