提问的那人说：“哦，是吗？看着。”他把吐司扔到地上，结果涂了黄油的那面朝上。
另一人说：“你看，我就说嘛。”
一开始的那人回答：“哦，我知道了。我涂错面了！”
对这个人来说，他的理论无懈可击。

20世纪哲学家卡尔·波普尔在批判归纳逻辑时表示，一项理论要想站得住脚，就必须具备可证伪性，也就是能够证明该理论在某些可能的情况下是错的。在上面这则伪笑话中，不存在任何弗洛伊德学派心理治疗师会承认其理论为错误的情况。
下面是一则真的笑话，这则笑话更加一针见血地表达了波普尔的观点。

病人：昨晚我梦见自己跟詹妮弗·洛佩兹和安吉丽娜·朱莉同床共枕，三人翻云覆雨了一整晚。
心理医生：很显然，你有一个根深蒂固的欲望，就是想跟你母亲睡觉。
病人：什么？！但那两人没一个长得像我妈啊！
心理医生：啊哈！这就叫反向形成[12] ！你显然在压抑自己真正的欲望。
上面这则并不是什么笑话，事实上某些弗洛伊德学说的信徒，就是用这种方式推理的。他们的推理存在一个问题，即想象不出能够反驳俄狄浦斯[13] 理论的现实情况。
