I don’t know how I feel about this, but I just whipped up a web app using Python and a new tool I had heard about, niceGUI. It’s a clever name. It abstracts away most of the work in setting up a web server, but keeps the logic in Python, which makes it pretty easy for me. You just write in a simple layout container and what controls go in it and you are pretty much done. Unless you want to change the look. Then you are stuck trying to figure out what CSS classes to use because they are defined by other projects, Tailwind and Quasar, which assume you know your way around CSS.
While spending an hour searching for answers I found myself on Deepwiki.com. This uses a large language model (they call it Devin) which had already indexed the niceGUI documents and code on the GitHub repository. I had hit a dead end, so I asked it my formatting question. And 10 seconds later it gave me the exact answer, with an explanation, and a couple of examples, plus links to the code. I tried another one, and it answered just as easily, adding to the previous results. I was able to fix my page in with 5 queries, and the answers worked every time.
So here’s an example of an LLM that I could check that really helped me in my task. It didn’t write my code, but it simplified my work enormously. Am I wasting resources? I can only hope these LLMs get more efficient over time. China is learning to do this simply because the USA won’t let them use powerful chips. The next year will be interesting.
