i love when job listings read as active threats

I just wanna make cool stuff that doesn’t hurt anyone while having a good quality of life is that so much to ask?

all my internal stuff is successfully running through the wonderful anville proxy (https://codeberg.org/sugar700/anville)! definitely recommend, the config in kdl was delightful to write and getting it up and running couldn't be easier.

now my next hosting project is getting off of coolify and traefik for my public stuff. truly I dislike working with traefik and coolify is a slopped up mess, but I don't have a great solution for deploy previews still 😔

no reddit, I don't think the guix community would appreciate me asking them about nixpkgs

(I don't actually want to move off of nix, having a git history of all my configs and packages is far too convenient and I don't think I can move to guix because my main system is on nvidia)

well i've been on nixos for about 8 months now and am finally learning how to package things myself which, if my pattern with void linux holds, means I'll move off of it in like 2 months

DST-end is confusing, isn't it?

now that everything's working I think that means my move off of porkbun to mythic-beasts is done! it only took like 2 weeks.

now hopefully mythic-beasts doesn't start promoting slop to me

IMPORTANT VULNERABILITY DISCLOSURE: sometimes I feel sad

i will not mention how many times I went "ok I told it to wait 10 mins to check instead of the default 30s, let me check fedi while I wait" and then realized I could not do that

hello i'm back. I had the fun misfortune of caddy deciding today was a good day to renew the cert I use for my local tailscale'd stuff (like gotosocial), at the same time that mythic-beasts let me know that they were having problems with the dnssec and disabling it for that domain, which meant that my txt records weren't actually propagating at the same time that I was trying to set them to renew my certs 🙃

ahh dns

i swear i recently read an article from an anti-ai blog going into anthropic's financials and how most of their debt was covered by microsoft and nvidia but I can't find it anywhere now- does that sound familiar to anyone?

hey if anyone sees this could you reply to it? troubleshooting some dns migration

edit: seems to be working!

that statement saying "actually, dumping hundreds of brute-forced proofs does not help with the practice and advancement of mathematics" is exactly the line software devs should take, but programmer pop culture has always valued short term convenience over most other concerns, so here we are

If you actually read the “Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them.” post going around, you’ll find a transparent attempt to clumsily string together a conspiracy.

The post is predicated on the idea that a feature of WebAuthn called “attestation”, which is only used in high-assurance and usually corporate scenarios, and usually with physical hardware security keys, will be leveraged to hurt people, somehow.

The post posits that a website like X will bait and switch users: first, you get a passkey. Then, later, scary “attested” passkeys! This simply isn’t possible to do because attestation isn’t supported on the web for mass market, consumer authentication.

Attestation for passkeys (software-based, syncable credentials) is antithetical to their mass market goals, and would freeze out independent, non-corporate-backed credential managers. It’s an explicit non-goal of the designers of passkeys, who work together in a forum anyone can join.

And trust me, websites and apps like banks repeatedly asked for attestation at the beginning of the industry’s passkey journey. The platforms, browsers, and credential management apps have held firm that the goal of passkeys is reducing phishing and **not** some kind of trusted computing scheme. (And I will note: over my dead body!)

Besides the theory of the case being fundamentally wrong, there are several things that make the post disqualifying in terms of arguing something useful or important in the realm of security, privacy, and user authentication:

1. Intentionally presenting things that are complicated as inherently suspicious. (Delivering security by design can be complicated, yes!)

2. Describing TOTP as a “great solution” for adding security to a password-based account. When the most common threat model on the web is phishing (a word the post never mentions!), TOTP hardly buys you _anything_. TOTP is phishable.

3. Seeming to be unbothered by how many logical leaps are being taken without actually understanding the topic being discussed.

There are bad things happening in tech and untrustworthy people and companies do exist, but they’re largely in the AI space, not the “let’s stop people we love from getting compromised through phishing” space.

for a while tech was kind of like the "escape hatch" for people who couldn't or wouldn't fit in at other corporations and now it's sort of like a flaming timber fell on the escape hatch while people were still lining up to get in

it's a new season for technology & for technologists, and our labor and its impact to the world are both more greater and more dangerous than ever.

how do we make sense of work in an industry many of us no longer recognize?
