People who have career mentors (outside of managers in their workplace), how did you find those mentors? I currently find myself at a stage in my life where I could really use the advice of someone with more experience but I'm unsure how to make that kind of connection.

Are you a man who works in tech, writing code for a living? Do you work with women who do the same? Then you absolutely are at high risk of always assuming their code isn’t good enough… that you know more than they do, even when it’s their area of experience, even when they have years more experience than you do. Unless you are working to explicitly remove the sexism assumptions our society has drilled into you, you are also being sexist. That’s how culture works.
Please stop. Be introspective.

Being a woman in the tech industry has unfortunately given me an incredible amount of experience dealing with hate, harassment, & violent verbal attacks. It’s given me an incredibly thick skin. However recent attacks are pushing me over some kind of edge. It’s horrible to work hard on something for years, with an amazing team, only to have the weirdest, totally-wrong theories floated around as fact, endorsed by colleagues across the web industry. This level of hatred and cynicism is shocking.
