what happened is, major tech companies, having the power to decide what is convenient for us and what's not, having the power to create artificial inconveniences and impose them on us, made sure that what gives them competitive advantage and ad-tech money is relatively more convenient, and where it's not possible, they made the more sensible option artificially much more difficult to use, either intentionally, or as a side effect of just piling everything into one single account

whenever techies talk about users wanting this or that, they're lying. they never care about what people actually want. the "user" is an abstraction of people using computers that they use to project their desires as our wants

these things happen because it makes money for these companies

people use what's possible and convenient. there was a time when that was the rss feed and imap and DAV and similar, and people used those things. client apps could make it easy to use them

this is not "what users really wanted" or "the natural progression of tech"

this is what was convenient for data siloing adware businesses such as google facebook microsoft, which other platforms and websites cargo culted

this isn't because of security either; the security problem is google apple and microsoft built a user tech stack where one login can grant access to literally EVERYTHING about your person

it doesn't have to be like that, but they wanted it to be like that cos money

i miss when it was easy and convenient to use rss/imap, and to some extent, carddav/caldav/webdav

when everything had public api's so you could easily have some client app for youtube or whatever that fit your needs without it breaking every few weeks

when websites were actually made up of html css and js and they were not binary blobs with underlying js/css/html being merely surrogate machine code

when a single website couldn't bring a modern computer to its knees
