Ode to Taco Bell, by Éros Brousson:

“For years I thought that Taco Bell was a fictional restaurant in video game like GTA, a place that only existed between a strip club, a gun store, and a man in a Hawaiian shirt committing a felony.

“Then I landed in Miami and there it was: between a strip club, a gun store, and a man in a Hawaiian shirt committing a felony. The purple bell glowing in the dark like a church for people whose evening has gone horribly wrong”

Boost to test.

If your vote didn't matter this November, Donald Trump wouldn't be fighting this hard to take it away.

Something you might remember from childhood is cheap balsa wood plane kits. You would carefully assemble them — no glue needed — and they would actually fly. The fancy ones had a red plastic propeller and were powered by an elastic band. I just happened to think of them, and went and looked, and it turns out that the company that makes them is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

That's an interesting frame.

I'd argue that the inverse of pressure is freedom. Freedom to spend time on what needs to be done. Freedom to investigate alternatives. All of that without external constraints.

And I'd also argue code quality and product quality are directly proportional on a sufficiently long time frame.

So attention and freedom are directly proportional to overall quality. Which also feels right.

A hard to use product with high internal quality or a easy to use product with low internal quality can succeed for a while if it has first-mover advantage. But it will probably be replaced in that market by competitors that are higher on both factors.

High quality products are the result of attention and that attention works best when the feedback from that attention can be freely implemented.

If those get out of whack you can have a lot of feedback driving frantic fixes (or none) or a crappy product that might be implemented well technically but is hard to use because the attention to user needs is missing.

Product quality is proportional to attention.

Code quality is inversely proportional to pressure.
