Foolproof >30 year old test

Writing some stuff on article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights #ECHR updated for the era of AI-powered ransomware gangs. And I made a graph:

LOL, I wouldn't be surprised if that's true. #DanaWhite #Trump

@cwebber's essay is SO GOOD. I am dismayed that I missed it.

The court ruled in 1987 that merely storing data of someone's private life was infringing. In 1987 we were still able to keep data secure. Almost no one is still able to do that, we send data across the globe & it gets ransomwared. As of 2026 the "mere storing" is far more harmful than it was in 1987, and maybe we should re-evaluate data retention rules in that light.

RE: https://social.edps.europa.eu/@EDPS/117568937323795939

The European Court of Human Rights has previously & correctly stated that even the mere storing of data relating to the private life of an individual amounts to an interference within the meaning of Article 8 (see Leander v. Sweden, 26 March 1987, § 48, Series A no. 116). Which means an agency needs a good reason to store any data, and the more it stores, the better the reason has to be. Proportionality.

Does your organisation rely on NLnet Labs? If you have budget left this year, please consider using some of it to support our #OpenSource work.

As an independent non-profit foundation, we fund maintenance of our open-source software through support agreements, new development through grants, and research and policy work from our reserves.

Take out a support agreement, sponsor a feature, or make a donation. If someone else manages the budget, please share this with them.

In these darkening times, institutions can make all the difference. Even when they are not perfect. Whenever you see politicians disparaging the European Convention on Human Rights, you should be very worried.

Big changes with IPFS: https://blog.ipfs.tech/2026-10-new-stewards-public-network-services/

I always loved the idea of the Interplanetary File System (IPFS), distributed, locally hosted, shared. But it never got close to its promise, then got distracted with file coins and crypto stuff.

Looks like they have been working on a structural re-org.

Honestly though just give me a modern version of eMule where it was easy to search, host, chat, and rate content and collections.

The latest Linux Kernel contains 3 security fixes for Xen and nothing else. It's not that common that the Linux Kernel gets updated with just 3 changes, so I guess those are considered to be very important. In case you rely on Xen, you probably want to have a look and update asap. https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v7.x/ChangeLog-7.3.3

You'll have to endure another shameless job offer from my workplace, but it's a really cool job, so I thought I'd share this:

We're looking for a (Senior) Embedded FPGA Developer (m/w/d).

We're looking for folks with deep knowledge about (Xilinx) FPGAs, PC hardware, Linux. Networking would be a bonus point.

It's a new codebase and I promise it's interesting 😎

Fully remote (in Germany).
