Also, two amendments that would exclude the error-prone scanning for unknown material and for solicitation of children ("grooming") got a clear simple majority: 345+/237-/18a and 346+/254-/3a. Edit: To be clear, they were *not* adopted, since they failed to get an absolute majority of 360 votes. (4/X)
A core amendment from Greens, which limits the scanning to specific suspects, got a simple majority of 322 in favour, 255 against, 36 abstentions. Even though this was not sufficient for the required absolute majority, this sends a clear signal in view of the on-going negotiations on the long-term Regulation, where this is part of the Parliament's mandate. The Parliament wants to stick to this line, this became clear today. (3/X)
In second reading, any amendments, including rejections, need an absolute majority of members (360 out of currently 719). This is always difficult to reach, and even more so in the last voting session before the summer break, when around 100 MEPs were not there anymore. Still, two amendments from Greens and Liberals, on protecting encrypted communications, were adopted. (2/X)
The European Parliament today failed to reject a revival of the "#chatcontrol 1.0" Regulation that had expired in April. This is not nice, especially after the Parliament had already voted twice against mass scanning of private communications in March. The new vote was only possible because the Member States revived the law and sent it back to Parliament for second reading. But there is also a bright side. (1/X)

We have a deal on the #AIAct Omnibus. I'll leave it to others to publicly comment on how happy or unhappy we are. Too tired now anyway.
We are in the same room where the final negotiations on the #AIAct took place over 39 hours in December 2023. It might be haunted - still no agreement.
The extension of the temporary #chatcontrol 1.0 was rejected by the European Parliament today, bizarrely enough with votes by Greens, Left and EPP (for different reasons). First reading is closed, this was it. It will lapse on midnight of 3rd April. 😁

This should really trigger some blast from the authorities.
Edit: Now without Youtube, thanks to @leanderlindahl for flagging it.
The results of the roll-call votes are here: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/PV-10-2026-03-11-RCV_EN.pdf The amendment that limits it to "specific suspects" is amendment 5, pages 12-13. #chatcontrol
In a major win for digital privacy, the European Parliament just (again) limited all scanning of communications for child abuse material to specific suspects. No mass surveillance, no #chatcontrol. Now the negotiations with Member States will be interesting. They are already supposed to start tomorrow morning.
The @europarl_en LIBE committe just rejected #chatcontrol 1.0, the extension of the temporary derogation from ePrivacy. Yeah!
The EU Regulation laying down additional procedural rules on the enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation was published today and will apply from 2nd April 2027. #GDPR #EUdataP https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=OJ:L_202502518 Thanks to everybody who worked on it with us.
This is the #GDPR #EUdataP simplification we need: https://www.edpb.europa.eu/system/files/2025-07/edpb-statement-20250702-enhanced-clarity-support-engagement_en_0.pdf Not ripping apart the underlying law, but making implementation simpler with guidance, templates, etc.
The EU Commission has launched a call for feedback on the #DigitalOmnibus. https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14855-Simplification-digital-package-and-omnibus_en (scroll down, at the top of the page there is still the - now closed - call for evidence from September).
